  • KC to hold open baseball tryouts
    The Kaskaskia College Blue Devils, under head coach Mitch Koester, will hold an open tryout for prospective players next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the college baseball field.   Players throughout the area are welcome to attend, and all players participating must have a completed physical form with them.   The tryout will be held for 2-3 hours, with conditioning.   • Goin' Slideways
    VANDALIA – One of the best remote-controlled racing dirt tracks in the state is right here in town, and will soon begin its first championship points series. The Slideways RC club recently completed work on an outdoor RC track by the Kaskaskia Dragon on Rock Island Avenue, and will be hosting an open house at the track on Saturday to give anyone in the community a chance to try it out. Anyone who owns any type of RC car can drive around the track from noon-3 p.m.. Following an hour of maintenance, practice will be held for the 6 p.m. feature races.
  • Earnest a HOFer
    A Vandalia graduate has become the first bowler to be inducted in Vanderbilt University’s Athletic Hall of Fame, and that honor came in the same week as she was competing in a major bowling championship and preparing to represent the United States in another tournament. Josie Earnest received her induction notice last Tuesday, one day after she began bowling at the U.S. Open in Columbus, Ohio, where she would finish 11th at the end of the tournament.
  • HARNER: Birth of daughter ends long battle, opens next chapter
    ST. LOUIS – We weren’t all made to be athletes. I, along with anyone who has ever had the misfortune of watching me attempt to play sports competitively, can vouch for that. Fortunately, we were all made to do something, and one of the most wonderful life experiences is helping guide someone in finding their life song. I’m only a week into that particular process, but I love every second of it.
  • The Freight to play in state tourney
    The Freight will again come out of retirement to play in the state wooden bat fast-pitch softball tournament. The two-time national champion squad will play this weekend in Casey during the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame weekend. Vandalia will play the Pinckneyville Falcons in the first game of the tournament at 7 p.m. on Friday. There is a three-game guarantee in the three-day tournament.

  • Fast-pitch softball tryouts in O'Fallon are on Aug. 3-4
    The Tomahawks fast-pitch softball organization will hold tryouts for its 10U-16U age groups on Aug. 3-4 at Field 6 in O'Fallon City Park. That is the high school's varsity field.
