  • Field of Dreams All-Stars go 2-2 at Metzger-Thiele
    VANDALIA – The Vandalia Field of Dreams All-Stars had a solid showing at Saturday’s Metzger-Thiele Classic, reaching the championship game of the tournament. Playing in a field with club baseball teams from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Washington (Mo.) University in the second annual event, the VFOD All-Stars had a strong showing for a team with a mixed roster that had very little practice time.

  • BCH Auto Detail is slo-pitch champ
    BCH Auto Detail earned the championship of Vandalia men’s slo-pitch softball league last Wednesday by defeating Liberty Trading, 9-4, in the title game of the league’s double-elimination tournament. Shawn Harris and Justin Atwood were named the co-MVPs of the tournament after both had extra-base hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie. In the semifinals, Liberty beat Montgomery Plumbing, 13-1, to earn the right to face BCH in the title game.
  • Grobie Flooring gets top 5 finish at state
    Grobie Flooring, a fast-pitch softball team based in Altamont, recently finished fourth at the state wooden bat tournament in Casey. In game one, Grobie beat the Belleville Stallions, 8-2; in game two, Grobie lost to Vandalia Freight, 3-0; in game three, Grobie beat Pinckneyville Lee's Sports, 5-1; and in game four, Grobie lost to Belleville, 1-0.

  • KC to hold open baseball tryouts
    The Kaskaskia College Blue Devils, under head coach Mitch Koester, will hold an open tryout for prospective players next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the college baseball field.   Players throughout the area are welcome to attend, and all players participating must have a completed physical form with them.   The tryout will be held for 2-3 hours, with conditioning.   • Rain doesn't slow up national relay stage
    A national relay raising money for One Run For Boston passed through Fayette County last Thursday night, despite cold and rainy conditions. Rick Myers, a Vandalia resident and marathon enthusiast, was joined for Stage 214 by Matt Roberts of Vandalia and Scott Ealy of Effingham for an 11-mile run beginning at 11:10 p.m. at Bluff Equipment in Bluff City. The run continued to the intersection of U.S. Route 40 and Interstate Drive in St. Elmo, with the trio arriving slightly ahead of schedule at 1:12 a.m.
  • Sports Briefs (April 10)
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County will once again be hosting a local level competition in Major League Baseball’s national Pitch, Hit and Run and contest. The free skills competition will be held at the YMCA’s soccer fields on April 26 at 1:30 p.m., with registration to begin at 1 p.m. Boys and girls will be divided into age groups (7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14) for the competition in the first of four levels of the contest.
  • Sports Briefs (April 3)
    C-Bar Rodeo holding Capitol show Farina-based C-Bar Rodeo Co. is hosting the second annual Clash at the Capitol rodeo at the coliseum on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield on April 11 and 12. Featured at the event is championship bull riding and barrel racing, with the event to begin at 7 p.m. each night. Trick and roman rider Dusti Lynn Crain, a St. Peter native who performs at the Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., will be participating at the Springfield event.
