100 CAREER VICTORIES

Jake Stewart has a passion for wrestling.
And that passion has allowed the Vandalia Community High School senior to make progress year after year in his chosen sport.
That progress was evident recently, as Stewart recorded the 100th victory of his prep career last Wednesday night at Hillsboro.
"It's something you think about and strive for when you come into high school as a freshman" Stewart said of getting 100 wins. "It's a good accomplishment."

Fire Guts Brownstown Home

Firefighters from six area departments responded to a fire south of Brownstown on Friday morning that destroyed the home of the Dustin Sefton family. The Brownstown Fire Department was called to the home off of the Brownstown blacktop shortly after 9 a.m., and called for mutual aid assistance from firefighters from Vandalia, St. Elmo, St. Peter, Farina and Altamont.

Firefighters were at the scene for more than five hours.

Two injured in Route 51 accident

Both drivers involved in an accident on U.S. Route 51 near Vernon early last Saturday morning were airlifted to St. Louis hospitals.

According to the Illinois State Police, a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Kevin W. Donnals, 31, of Farina, was northbound on Route 51 when he crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a 2007 Ford propane tanker truck driven by a 58-year-old Vandalia male. His name was not released by the state police.

The Patoka and Vandalia fire departments were called to extricate Donnals from his vehicle.

Traffic changes are proposed

Three months after an accident claimed the lives of four members of a Greenville family, proposals have been presented to improve traffic safety at Vandalia rail crossings.

Lady Vandals beat Greenville, fall to state-ranked Litchfield

That's how Michelle McNary summed up her team's 33-31 win over Greenville on Tuesday night.
The Lady Vandals had a double-digit lead, but the Comets put together a late spurt to make things interesting.
In the end, the hosts made enough free throws to hold on for the hard-fought win.

Vandalia wrestling team earns dual wins

PETERSBURG — The Vandalia Community High School wrestling team improved to 24-7 in duals after two close wins on Saturday.
Vandalia defeated Beardstown, 40-39.
The Vandals also edged Petersburg-PORTA, 40-37.

Beardstown won by forfeit at 106 pounds, but Vandalia's Jarrett Paslay won by forfeit at 113.
Jake Lux of Beardstown defeated Chaston Womack, 3-2, at 120. Ryne Lipsey of Vandalia pinned Casimir Amare in 42 seconds at 126.

Wrestling team earns dual wins at Litchfield, Carlinville

LITCHFIELD — The Vandalia Vandals split two duals at Litchfield on Thursday night.
Vandalia beat Highland, 51-21. But Litchfield knocked off the Vandals, 39-30.
After splitting the duals, the Vandals are now 19-6 in duals.

Litchfield won by forfeit at 106. Vandalia's Jarrett Paslay defeated Collin Davidson, 7-2, at 113. Chaston Womack earned a 15-0 decision over Tyler Thiessen at 120.

• Derek W. Rogers, 32, RR 2, St. Elmo, was arrested on Jan. 19 on a charge of driving while his license is revoked. Bond was $1,500.
• James G. Rogers, 48, 1008 N. Maple St., St. Elmo, was arrested on Jan. 19 on a charge of aggravated domestic battery. He was being held awaiting the setting of bond.
• Burr M. Waltz, 49, South Fifth Street, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 19 on a charge of methamphetamine, meth precursor or anhydrous ammonia trafficking. He was being held awaiting the setting of bond.
