St. Elmo's Hill, Patoka's Issak make state

Two local athletes have qualified for the Illinois High School Association state track meet after placing at the Newton Sectional on Friday.

St. Elmo junior Molly Hill will become a three-time state qualifier in the discus, after advancing with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.

She placed seventh in the state last season.

Patoka freshman Taylor Issak will make her first state appearance after qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.96 seconds, which is the 11th fastest sectional time among qualifiers.

Area graduations are this weekend

Commencement exercises will be held this weekend at all seven area high schools.
The schedule is as follows:
Friday
• Patoka High School-7 p.m.
Saturday
• Mulberry Grove High School-1 p.m.
• South Central High School-7 p.m.
•Vandalia Community High School-7 p.m.
• St. Elmo High School-7 p.m.
Sunday
• Ramsey High School-3 p.m.
• Brownstown High School-3 p.m.

Congratulations to graduates

During the next few days, the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” will drift out of gymnasiums throughout the area.
Graduates will don robes and turn tassels. Speakers will affirm and exhort. And parents will offer sighs of relief and shed tears of joy.
It’s graduation time in Fayette County. It’s a time of endings and beginnings. It’s a time when students are making plans for their futures – whether that be in college, the military or the working world.

Pair of small-school athletes make state

Two local athletes have qualified for the Illinois High School Association Class A state track meet after placing at the Newton Sectional on Friday.

St. Elmo junior Molly Hill became a three-time state qualifier in the discus throw, after advancing with a sectional-winning throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.

She placed seventh in the state last season, with 116 feet, 2 inches. The top seed for state this season is 135 feet, 2 inches.

The first of four flights of discus throws begins at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Vandals nearly victorious on senior day

VANDALIA – On a day to honor the team’s five seniors, the Vandals competed to the last at-bat, falling just a few inches short of a chance at victory.

Senior Isaac Francis shot a line drive that was caught by Southwestern’s ranging shortstop to end the game and give the Birds a 3-2 South Central Conference victory.

PTSD support group to be started in Vandalia

Attention all combat veterans! It should come as no surprise to you that there are many military veterans within our community suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – the same disorder many of you experienced after returning from war. As you can attest, if this disorder is left untreated, PTSD can destroy lives – the life of the individual suffering the disorder and the life of anyone close to them.

Late Saturday afternoon, “Katy,” the black lab/blue heeler (?), began barking excitedly as she looked toward the girls’ (Rhonda and Blackie) chicken roost. Glancing out the kitchen window and not seeing anything, I dismissed it as some little critter that was visiting the yard.
