Soroptimists hosting widows' luncheon

Soroptimist International of Vandalia is accepting reservations through Friday for its New Beginnings Luncheon on Saturday, June 1.
The free event for area widows will be held from noon-2 p.m. on June 1 at St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia.
Reservations are required, and all ages are invited to attend. To make reservations, call Judy Wasmuth at 283-2989 by Friday.
In addition to lunch, the event will include speakers, music and door prizes.

Ramsey softball sectional game moved to Macon

The sectional softball game between Ramsey and Cumberland has been moved from Moweaqua to Macon for Tuesday.

Gordon repeats as state champ

EAST PEORIA – Oh, the drama.

For anyone with a rooting interest in Curtis Gordon’s pole vault performance at Saturday’s Illinois Elementary School Association state championships, it was tough to stand still throughout the final four heights.

Battling Parkside’s Ryan Ashenbremer in 3-inch increments in the Class AA finals, the tension rose on every attempt as Gordon and Ashenbremer matched heights up to 12 feet, 9 inches.

Home runs, defense highlight sectional win for South Central

GREENUP — Two home runs, 16 hits and stellar defense fueled an 11-3 win for South Central on Wednesday, as the Cougars took down North Clay in a sectional semifinal game.

Seniors Kyle Bray and Austin Schwarm accounted for five of those runs with home runs, and Schwarm made about as good of a catch as any high school player could make to rob a North Clay batter of what would have been a two-run double.

Sefton HCE holds Mother's Day meeting

Fifteen members were present for the May 9 Mother’s Day potluck and meeting of the Sefton HCE Unit. Chairman  Flo Allen welcomed those present, and Panzi Blackwell asked the blessing for the meal. Following the meal, Sally Behrends and her kitchen helper cleaned the area.

South Central freshman makes state in 200

One small-school athlete from the area has qualified for the Illinois High School Association Class A state track meet.

Chase Riley, a freshman at South Central High School who runs for the Patoka/South Central co-op track team, placed second in the 200-meter dash at the Lawrenceville Sectional to qualify for state.

His time of 24.05 seconds allows him to be the only freshman qualifier in the 200.

Preliminaries in the 200-meter dash will be held on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston on Thursday at about 2:15 p.m.

13 years in DUI case

A Shobonier man who had nine prior convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as numerous convictions for driving while his license is revoked, has agreed to a 13-year prison sentence.

Police offer reward for armed robbery tips

The Vandalia Police Department is looking for the public’s help in trying to solve last Wednesday’s armed robbery of a convenience store, and it’s willing to pay for that help.
Police Chief Jeff Ray announced on Monday that the investigation into the armed robbery at Phillips 66 shortly after 9 p.m. last Wednesday is continuing.
Ray said that a white male who had his face covered entered the convenience store alone, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the attendant on duty.

Police offer reward for armed robbery tips

The Vandalia Police Department, through Fayette County Crime Watchers, is offering a reward of $500 to the first caller to provide information about last week's armed robbery that leads to an arrest and conviction.

The armed robbery took place shortly after 9 p.m. last Wednesday at the Phillips 66 convenience store at 1333 N. Kennedy Blvd. Police said that a white male who had his face covered showed a gun and demanded money from an attendant.

The suspect then fled on foot from the business.
