Coroner releases information on...

Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen reported two deaths in Fayette County late last week.
Bowen said that late Thursday evening, Tommy Collier, 60, of Odin, was found dead in a corn crib near Shobonier.
The coroner said that Collier was on a farm grinding corn for cattle at the time of his death.
He said that Collier’s wife contacted the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office after being unable to locate her husband. A sheriff’s deputy found Collier in the corn crib.
Bowen pronounced Collier dead at the scene at 12:27 a.m. on Friday.

Amateur radio Field Day will be...

On-air demonstrations, satellite communications and emergency preparedness activities are on tap for members of the Old Capital Amateur Radio Club as they gear up to celebrate Amateur Radio Week, June 22-23.
During Amateur Radio Week, enthusiasts will put on demonstrations, give talks to community groups and take part in other activities to raise awareness about Amateur Radio.

Lake eatery put on hold

As of Tuesday morning, the Fayette County Board was scheduled to vote next week on a second request for a liquor license filed by a couple planning to operate a restaurant on Vandalia Lake.

Mabrys continue working toward...

A couple planning to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake say that the city council’s vote on enforcing its zoning ordinance does not stop them from proceeding with their plans.
“We keep going,” Steve “Luke” Mabry said last Wednesday afternoon.
Mabry and his wife, Latisha, are finalizing work on the conversion of a house into a restaurant called The Lake House, located on Ill. Route 185 at the Vandalia Lake bridge.

Carrying the Banner for Cancer...

Eight-year-old Emmily Leidner helps carry the survivors banner at the start of the Fayette County Relay for Life on Saturday afternoon at the Family YMCA of Fayette County.

Heavy rains on Friday night and the threat of rain on Saturday caused organizers to move the event from Rogier Park to the YMCA facilities.

Sheriff's Arrest Log

• Harold B. O’Neal Jr., 57, Memphis, Tenn., was arrested on June 4 on charges of failure to report an accident and failure to notify of damage. Bond was $1,500.
• David E. Blankenship, 53, 1407 W. Main St., Vandalia, was arrested on June 4 on a charge of disorderly conduct. Bond was $1,500.
• Gregory B. Stoner, 46, 415 E. Cumberland Road, St. Elmo, was arrested on June 4 on a charge of disorderly conduct. Bond was $2,500.

City puts garbage law on the...

The city of Vandalia has charged all residents for trash pickup in the past, but didn’t have specific wording on that issue in its ordinance book. It does now.
The council approved on Monday an ordinance amendment that states that it’s “in the best interest of the public health … that the use of garbage collection … be made mandatory.”
It further states that “all occupied residences shall pay the charges for residential waste collection.”

Second liquor license vote a tie

A tie vote meant that for the second time in three months, the Fayette County Board declined to grant a liquor license to a couple planning to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake.
After a lengthy discussion on Tuesday evening, the board voted 7-7 on the license application filed by Steve “Luke” and Latisha Mabry.

Local authors to sign books...

Vandalia natives Lenora Henson and Shane Bowen will be at Words, Wicks & Wood on Gallatin Street from 10 a.m.-noon this Saturday. They will be there to meet the public and to sign their books, “The Wicked Garden” and “Cops & Robbers,” respectively.
