Police offer reward for armed...

The Vandalia Police Department, through Fayette County Crime Watchers, is offering a reward of $500 to the first caller to provide information about last week's armed robbery that leads to an arrest and conviction.

The armed robbery took place shortly after 9 p.m. last Wednesday at the Phillips 66 convenience store at 1333 N. Kennedy Blvd. Police said that a white male who had his face covered showed a gun and demanded money from an attendant.

The suspect then fled on foot from the business.

13 years in DUI case

A Shobonier man who had nine prior convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as numerous convictions for driving while his license is revoked, has agreed to a 13-year prison sentence.

A Vandalia native who has been an officer with the city police department for the past 13 years is the department’s new chief.

The Egyptian-Illini Conference softball tournament has been moved from St. Elmo to Mulberry Grove due to poor field conditions in St. Elmo. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Vandalia softball team will play a makeup game at Roxana on Friday at 4:30 p.m. That will be the final conference game of the season.

The St. Elmo baseball team will travel to Mulberry Grove for Friday's game at 4:15 p.m.

County OKs liquor license for...

Less than four weeks after voting down a request for a liquor license, the Fayette County Board approved the renewal of a license.
And, as they did so, the board chairman assured the holders of the renewed license that the two requests differed substantially.
The board took only about 10 minutes to OK the renewal of the license for Summer Breeze Wine House in St. James, a rural area between St. Elmo and St. Peter.

City hears objections to Mabrys...

The city of Vandalia’s legal counsel said it’s his legal opinion that a couple planning to start a restaurant on Vandalia Lake cannot legally do so at their planned location.
About three weeks after residents living in a lake subdivision near the bridge on Ill. Route 185 voiced their objections to the plans of Steve and Latisha Mabry to the county board, they did the same to the city council.

County revises liquor ordinance

Less than a month after it rejected a liquor license application, the Fayette County Board voted to clean up the wording of the county ordinance for one type of liquor license.
The board voted unanimously on Tuesday to clarify that the holder of a Class A liquor license may only sell alcoholic beverages that are to be consumed on-site.
Board Chairman Steve Knebel said that the board’s liquor committee met with State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison and Assistant State’s Attorney Amanda Ade-Harlow “to clarify ordinances.”
