  • Good picture of child with Santa Claus

    One of the joys I get at Christmas time is seeing children meeting Santa Claus. They sit on his knee, some happier than others, as some children really don’t know who that jolly old elf is, and they shed a few tears.
    However, that was certainly not the case with one little boy. The photo of 2-year-old Hunter Berning that you published in The Leader-Union and The Leader-Union Extra shows an absolutely precious little boy with a smile on his face, showing no fear, but utter fascination with Santa.

  • C&S again surpasses expectations

    There is just no way to thank so many people in every corner of our county for their generous response to those in need this year. The collections of cash, clothing, food, gifts and toys were overflowing and overwhelming!
    We would especially like to thank those who gave of their valuable time, to come and help sort, pack and distribute the baskets.
    Perhaps the words of one recipient best expresses the gratitude of all:
    “I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those involved with Caring and Sharing this year.

  • The Way We Were

    15 Years Ago

    1997 – The Vandalia Chamber of Commerce’s community improvement committee, headed by Jean Stombaugh, arranged to have Vandalia participate in a Community Swap with Tuscola. The University of Illinois Extension Program’s Community Swap program allows people to visit and assess each other’s community.
    Fayette County Supervisor of Assessments Cindi Lotz announced that she would seek a second term in office.

  • Adoption info searches not often fruitful

    I was 8 or 9 years old when my brother, Don, told me that I was adopted.
    The evidence was irrefutable: I was the only child in the family to have freckles, I was the only one (of six) who had to wear glasses at an early age and I didn’t have a baby book.
    I would say the absence of the baby book was the main proof of my birth outside the family. Also, Mom couldn’t put her hands on my birth certificate.
    When one adds up all the "facts," there are several good reasons why I believed what my older brother had told me.

  • More than ever, we need the hope and peace of Christmas

    It’s Christmas time!
    With Christmas only days away, we hope the hustle and bustle of the holiday is largely behind us and only the warmth and wonder remain.
    Though the holiday is primarily a celebration of the birth of Jesus, it also is a time of giving and hope.
    And it’s an annual reminder of the generosity that makes Fayette County such a special place. As always, the citizens of our area have been amazing in their response to the needs of others.

  • Could holiday events be combined to hike impact?

    We went to the candlelight tour at the Vandalia Statehouse on Saturday night. It was very beautiful, as always.
    Everyone should take advantage of the jewel we have right here in our own hometown. The downtown streets and shop windows are also very well done. The Christmas tree on top of the Gallatin Street hill is one of the prettiest ones I can remember,  and Lincoln Park is gorgeous.
    A big thanks to everyone that worked so hard on everything to make it so great!
