    1989 – A 7-inch snowfall was a welcome sight for farmers.
    Ramsey Lions Club and firefighters made plans for a new event – Ramsey Daze.
    Brownstown’s seventh grade volleyball team lost to eventual state champion, Beason, in first-round action of the Seventh Grade State Volleyball Tourney at Louistown.
    Tiffany Slater, 13-year-old Patoka School student from Vernon, won the division Spelling Bee in Centralia, sponsored by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She advanced to the regional finals in St. Louis.

  • Benjamine Halford killed man in self-defense

    Hurricane Township in the northwestern corner of Fayette County was a hotbed of Southern sympathy during the Civil War.
    There was a great deal of unrest throughout the county because a group of outlaws, numbering in the hundreds, roamed throughout a five-county area including Bond, Montgomery and Fayette, terrorizing the people, murdering, thieving and burning bridges.
    The following story was shared with me by Audrey Probst and Jean Vail, and took place in the home of Elias Richmond on Richmond Hill at the eastern end of the village of Fillmore.

  • Last chance to comment on the route of bypass

    Have you tried to imagine what Vandalia traffic patterns will be like when the four-laning of U.S. Route 51 finally reaches our area?
    Do you envision it simply following the current route, but wiping out front yards and businesses as it is widened to handle four lanes through the heart of the city?
    Do you see it cutting off of U.S. Route 51 north of  Vandalia Correctional Center and skirting around the west side of Vandalia Lake?

    1989 – Dr. Hans Rollinger was honored for 30 years as a practicing physician.
    Ramsey’s eighth grade girls volleyball team took third in the state, finishing the season with a 21-1 record.
    Cindy Harrison, Brian Kern and Michelle Osborne were named to Mid-State all-conference basketball teams.
