    Editor:
    In the Jan. 20 issue of The Leader-Union, the front page headline "Carson, Porter kicked off ballot" was very misleading.
    These persons did not have proper petitions, and so were denied a place on the ballot. Anyone that wants to run for public office is first required to file a petition with a required number of signatures. It is up to the one presenting the petition to make sure they have the required number.

  • Snyder was simply the best teacher

    I was sorry to read about the passing of Don Snyder.
    He was simply the finest teacher one could ever have, and certainly the best I ever had. He was always prepared, and expected the same from you. He was caring, patient and kind.
    Most of all, he was devoted to teaching young adults how to think and reason. He knew that anyone who opted to take chemistry and physics at VCHS was willing to not only study and learn, but also would learn to study. He took you seriously, and you certainly took him seriously.

  • Bypass Vandalia to the east

    I’m writing this in retrospection to a letter I wrote to Jerry Payonk back on Jan. 26, 2008  (nearly three years ago). That letter was in response to one of the earliest informational meetings about an Ill. Route 51 bypass around Vandalia.
    I never corresponded again,  knowing full well that the exercise that was unfolding would take years to plan, and possibly decades before the route would ever be built.

  • Caring & Sharing aids many people

    Thank you for your kind words regarding my accident and Caring & Sharing in The Leader-Union's Dec. 23 editorial.
    We are just glad to be able to still be involved. And we can't say enough for the good people who have picked up the reins and carried on with the leadership and the work of the organization throughout the county.
    We are always amazed at the overwhelming response of individuals and groups, through their contributions of cash, gifts, food and toys for those less fortunate each year.

  • City wrong to deny church in old Rural King building

    The city of Vandalia has done it again. Made another mistake, that is, by turning down the move of First Assembly of God Church to the old Rural King building.
    With the present job growth (none), the present business growth (very little) and at a time when we need God more than ever, they have stopped the church from moving.
    What really says it all is that if it had been a place of hard spirits instead of the Holy Spirit, they wouldn't have had to even take a vote. Does anyone see any humor in this?

    I wanted to tell those who have decorated the downtown area with Christmas decorations that it’s simply charming.
    It's elegant; it’s warm and it’s inviting.
    Thank you so much for your vision and the impetus to “make that vision come to life.” I love it and really appreciate your efforts.

  • Not a good time for a tax increase

    Editor:
    I saw a notice of proposed property tax increase in the local paper. What can our city officials be thinking? Right now, in these desperate times, people are out of work, losing their homes due to foreclosures right and left, watching our government spend billions of dollars bailing out incompetent banks, and worrying about the future of Medicare, Social Security and pensions.
    And they want to increase our already-high property taxes?

  • Operation OUTING gives elderly a chance to travel

    Thanks to Operation OUTING, nursing home residents in Vandalia have the opportunity to attend the Evergreen Outreach program at the First United Methodist Church on Mondays.
    Operation OUTING also offers them, free of charge, scenic trips to various destinations in our area. For most of them, these outings are the only chance they have to see sights outside of their facility. Imagine yourself in that situation, where you have to depend entirely on others to get outside the bounds of your residence and see the outside world!

  • Dudley supports 2nd Amendment rights, too

    We the people need to be made aware of false statements in letters, ads and speeches from Kyle McCarter, the candidate for state senate in the 51st district.
    McCarter states: “I am the only state senate candidate in the 51st district who is 100 percent pro Second Amendment.” This is contained in a letter with the heading “Sportsmen for Kyle McCarter” and is signed by McCarter.
