1996 – City police officer Danny Carman was injured in a two-vehicle accident at Randolph and Coles streets that occurred while he was responding to a call.
Melody Davis, 44, of St. Elmo, was killed in a two-car accident on the blacktop north of St. Elmo.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Wilson Stein of St. James were planning to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
The Vandalia City Council narrowed the list of candidates for economic development director from 38 to five.
This week’s Mystery Banks Photo: This young man, pictured about 60 years ago, grew up in Ramsey, one of 15 children in his family. He worked at a local factory, has three daughters and now lives in Vandalia.
1996 – The Vandalia City Council voted 5-4 to approve water and sewer rate increases, which averaged about 16 percent.
The city council voted 6-2 to allow local taverns to have outside beer gardens.
Arthur and Marie Buchanan of Vandalia planned to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Joe and Evelyn Faggetti also planned a golden anniversary celebration.
1996 – The Vandalia Municipal Swimming Pool was ready to open after extensive rehabilitation work was completed.
Reservations were being taken for the second annual Vandalia Community High School alumni banquet.
A Centralia judge, Harold Pennock III, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol following an auto accident in Centralia. The accident occurred a little more than an hour after Pennock completed his daily duties on the bench in Fayette County.
This week’s Mystery Banks Photo: This young man, a native of Oklahoma, moved to Brownstown during the oil boom in the late 1930s. He played baseball for the Bombers and married a girl from Vandalia. They had two girls and one boy. Now, he goes to Southern Texas in the winters.
