    1992 – As last week’s temperatures dipped below freezing, swelling peach buds – caught off guard by the unseasonably warm weather during most of March – succumbed to the harsh cold.
    The trial for a Bluff City man, Stuart Wayne Heaton, charged with the stabbing murder of a Ramsey girl, Krystal Lynn Naab, was scheduled to begin next week.
    An ammonia feed system is now removing an unhealthy byproduct from the city’s water supply.

    The Maddox House on Gallatin Street was a social center of capital-era Vandalia,  and was known far and wide as one of the best hotels in the state.

    15 Years Ago

    1997 – Kelly McGinnis of Greenville was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the August 1996 murder of Greenville Attorney Tom Meyer.
    By a 4-3 vote, the Vandalia Board of Education rescinded penalties handed down to two students through enforcement of the district’s athletic policy.
    Nathan Graumenz of Vandalia won the state championship in the 135-pound weight class at the state wrestling finals in Champaign. Michael Mabry of VCHS placed fourth in the 125-pound class.

    1992 – The Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital donated $38,000 to purchase new laparoscopic equipment.
    Fayette County Hospital held its first-ever health fair.
    Vandalia Junior High School boys basketball players Seth VonBehren and Zach Gummert were  named MVPs.
    Brownstown beat Mulberry Grove 15-13 and 15-10 in the eighth-grade volleyball regionals on Tuesday in Ramsey.
    Mr. and Mrs. Lewis H. Jones of Salem were to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on March 18.
