    1989 – Industrial Development Coordinator Todd Thoman resigned to accept a job as assistant director of marketing and economic development in Pekin.
    WPMB-WKRV’s Home Show attracted 2,700 people.
    Women of Distinction awards were presented by Soroptimist International of Vandalia to Erma Gibbons, the late Hazel Berlin, Gail Tish, Helen Barr, Violet Berry, Florence Eakin, Kathryn Brooks and Harriet Snyder.

  • The Union is 150 years old; let the celebration begin

    One hundred and fifty years ago this week, H.S. Humphrey took a step of faith and launched The Vandalia Union.
    The date was April 16, 1864. The war between the states was droning on, and the carnage was building.
    President Abraham Lincoln would be re-elected to a second term that fall.

    1989 – Rich Walker was re-elected mayor by a 2-1 margin over the nearest of four challengers. Incumbent Norma Cearlock defeated Marjorie Blythe for city clerk.
    Lori Payne was named Miss Kirksville (Mo.). The daughter of Marlene Payne of Vandalia and the late Elvin “Biz” Payne, the Northeast Missouri State university senior also won the best talent award for her snare drum and marimba piece. As Miss Kirksville, Payne competed in the Miss Missouri pageant.
