  • Fire early Wednesday

Vandalia firefighter Jeff Burnam mans the hose as firefighters extinguish a burning outbuilding north of Shobonier early Wednesday morning. Firefighters were sent to property owned by Carl Sprague shortly after 3:30 a.m., and were at the scene for about 30 minutes. Fire officials believe that the fire may have started when a fan motor overheated.

  • Tish responds to new complaint

The attorney for St. Elmo's mayor contends that the second attempt by the community’s former police chief to sue the mayor for slander is no better than the first.
In a motion filed on Monday in Fayette County Circuit Court, Charles A. Pierce of Belleville, the attorney for Mayor Larry Tish, argues that Ken Thomason’s amended suit still lacks specificity.
Thomason, who served as St. Elmo’s police chief for about 16½ years before being terminated by Tish last November, filed a slander suit against the mayor in November.

  • Simmons named SC basketball coach

At last week's South Central School District Board meeting, along-time assistant coach and athletic director at South Central High School, Rick Simmons, was named head coach of the high school boys basketball team.
Simmons being named the new head coach came as very little of a surprise to most in the area. The only shocking thing for most is that Simmons was not named the coach last season following the retirement of Gary Shirley.
