  • Skydiver dies in accident

    A Missouri man died from injuries sustained in a skydiving accident on Saturday evening at Vandalia Airport.
    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen said that Jonathan Bullar, 24, of Maryland Heights,  made a jump with a group of skydivers from about 6,500 feet and that his parachute failed to deploy.
    Bowen pronounced Bullar dead at the scene at 6:53 p.m.
    Bowen’s office and the Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the accident. An autopsy was performed on Monday at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
     

  • Brownstown man fatally injured in wreck

    A Brownstown man died from injuries sustained in an accident south of Shobonier on Friday morning.
    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen said Matthew L. Sefton of rural Brownstown, 52,  was traveling south on U.S. Route 51 near County Road 800 North on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he struck the rear of an SUV.
    The Illinois State Police said that the SUV, driven by David A. Meseke, 46, of Vandalia, was stopped on the highway, preparing to make a left turn.
    Sefton was pronounced dead by Bowen at Fayette County Hospital at 10:48 a.m. on Friday.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Oct. 14, 2010

    • Paul H. Lape, 48, 419 S. Seventh St., Vandalia, was arrested on Oct. 11 on a charge of domestic battery. No bond information was listed on the arrest log.
    • Christopher R. Webber, 35, 513 Cumberland Road, Brownstown, was arrested on Oct. 11 for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $5,000.
    • Jeffery R. Morecraft, 29, Mattoon, was arrested on Oct. 10 for failure to appear in court on a traffic charge. Bond was $3,500.

    ✔ Fayette County Hospital will hold its annual Health and Safety Expo at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus. The fair is from 7 a.m.-noon, and blood draws are from 7-11 a.m.

    The Brownstown/St. Elmo co-op eighth-grade girls basketball team won the South Central Eighth Grade Tournament last Friday. Team members are pictured.   • JV football tops Southwestern

    Ryan Ambuehl runs past a Southwestern defender during Vandalia's 28-26 win Monday afternoon. The JV football team is now 6-1 on the season and will host Pana for its final game next Monday at 6 p.m.
