  • Pana spoils Vandals' senior night; Vandalia hosting regional

    Playing for the rights to the South Central Conference championship, Vandalia and Pana battled to the bitter end last Thursday, with Pana notching a 25-19, 27-25 victory to spoil the Vandals’ senior night.

    Caught up in the pregame festivities ­–­ during which the team honored its six senior members – Vandalia was sluggish at the start of the match, quickly falling behind 9-3.

    “I think it was us being nervous coming out with senior night,” said coach Allison Smith. “It’s typical human nature.”

  • Vandals take tough loss against G-Ville

    Going against the No. 1 offense in the South Central Conference last Friday was a tough enough chore for the Vandalia defense.

    Doing it with several injuries and two players – sophomores Ryan Ambuehl and Luke Smith – making their first varsity starts on defense, would seemingly be an impossible mountain to climb.

    But that’s just what Vandalia did on senior night, though a happy ending was not to be after Greenville defeated the Vandals, 35-28, in another hard-fought game.

  • IFOR membership drive prizes awarded

    The Illinois Federation for Outdoor Resources recently held a membership drive. Winners were: Roger Withers (pictured), 36-gun safe with mystery gun; Jeff Cearlock, Stoeger model 835; Cindy Smith, Tarus 357 magnum; Bob Trexler, H&R slugger 12-gauge; Dillard Smith, .22 Cricket; Richard Schuesteer, H&R 20-gauge; and Don Klingston, .22 semi-automatic.

  • Vandals fall to Greenville on senior night

    Marty Johnson threw two touchdown passes to senior Daniel Bell, but the Vandals came up just short against Greenville on Friday, falling 35-28.

    The loss eliminated Vandalia from the playoffs and ended the careers of nine players.

  • Halloween in Vandalia

    Vandalia's celebration of Halloween gets under way this Saturday when Vandalia Main Street holds is Spooktacular Saturday.

    The event includes a storytime at Evans Public Library at 9:45 a.m., a children's costume contest at 10 a.m. at Family Video and trick-or-treating at downtown businesses at 10:30 am.

  • Vandalia firefighter injured at Effingham fire scene

    One of five Vandalia firefighters who provided mutual aid assistance for a fire in Effingham on Wednesday afternoon sustained facial burns.

    According to Vandalia Fire Chief Merle Adermann, Zac Stombaugh was treated in the emergency room at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham and released after sustaining first-degree burns, and possibly some second degree burns.

    Daria Caroline Murray
    Dustin and Joleen Murray of Vandalia are the parents of a girl born at 10:22 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.
    She weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She was named Daria Caroline.
    She has three brothers, 8-year-old Drake, 8-year-old Dagon and 6-year-old Jayce, and two sisters, 5-year-old Jalyn and 2-year-old Joselyn.
    Grandparents are Dennis and Kathy Hall, and Dave Murray, all of Vandalia, and Rita and Darrell McCammack of Brownstown.

    The 53rd annual Richards family reunion was held on Sept. 19, at Rogier Park pavilion, with 84 members and guests attending.
    The reunion included a basket dinner and visiting.
    A business meeting was called to order by President Bruce Richards. The 2009 minutes and financial reports were given by the secretary/treasurer, Jamie Elmore.
