  • City makes offer on land near city garage

    In a special meeting on Thursday, the Vandalia City Council voted to make an offer on property just south of the city garage.

    The city is offering to pay Tri-County Petroleum Inc. $112,500 for the property, which is a little more than 1 acre, according to Keith Schaal of Schaal & Associates Real Estate in Vandalia.

    Public Works Director John Moyer said after the meeting that the city needs to purchase the property in order to ensure that it can continue to get the department's trucks in and out of the garage on the west side of the property.

  • EMA coordinator dies on Thursday

    Fayette County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Steve Koehler lost his battle with cancer on Thursday.

    Funeral arrangements are pending at C&A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo for Koehler, 58, who has served as the county's EMA coordinator for about seven years.

    At the Fayette County Board meeting on Jan. 10, county board Chairman Steve Knebel appointed long-time EMA volunteer Jim Mahon to serve as the EMA coordinator on a temporary basis, due to Koehler's illness.

  • Okaw Grad Excels At Welding School

    Levi Tessman (at right in the first photo), a 2011 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, participated in the welding program at the Okaw Area Vocational Center his junior and senior years.

    He is now  attending a 10-month program in welding at the Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield. He has already earned all eight certifications offered at MTI and is at the top of his class there. Shown with Tessman is David Koleson, welding instructor at the Okaw Center.

    Evergreen Outreach met at Fayette County Hospital's Long Term Care this week.
    Bemie Ray was seated at the piano playing beautiful songs from a list she had made. She needed no music sheets, but played the following from memory: “Love Letters in the Sand," "Alice Blue Gown," "Ole Shanty Town" and "Down Mexico Way."

  • Planning for Relay for Life begins

    Twenty-five people attended the Relay For Life rally on Jan. 9 held at Joe’s Pizza.
    The theme of this year’s walk, which will be held June 2-3 at Rogier Park in Vandalia, will be “Rockin’ For a Cure.”
    Currently, 11 teams have signed up to raise funds for the Relay for Life.
    This year’s goal is $65,000, and $12,500 has been raised to date.
    Anyone interested in forming a team or assisting with the event is encouraged to contact Dave Rickman at 283-7066.
