    • Century Culture Club, 12:30 p.m., Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
    • The Avena Township Park Board will meet in the St. Elmo Community Park and probably will put up the Christmas decorations in the park and the Centennial Building.
    Thursday, Dec. 9
    • The Lunch Bunch will meet at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant. They will have a $10 gift exchange and the gift should be for either a man or woman.

    Churches combine to present cantata

    Immanuel (Augsburg) and St. Paul Lutheran churches of Shobonier and St. Peter Lutheran Church of St. Peter will present a Christmas cantata called "Child of Hope" this weekend.

    With combined voices from the three congregations, plus audience participation, the cantata expresses in new as well as familiar music the real message of Christmas – the birth of Christ.

  • Lutheran women give to St. L. seminary students

    The Altamont Zone of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League recently collected food, toiletries and other items to be donated to Concordia Seminary students and their families at the St. Louis campus.
    The following congregations participated: Holy Cross Ladies Society, Vandalia; Immanuel Ladies Aid, Shobonier; St. Paul Ladies Aid, Shobonier; St. Peter LWML/Ladies Aid, St. Peter; Immanuel LWML and Immanuel Ladies Aid, Altamont; St. Paul's Ladies Aid, Blue Point; Bethlehem Ladies Aid, Altamont; Zion LWML, Altamont; and Salem Ladies Society, Salem.

    Kaskaskia College announced that Tracie Dickenson of Vandalia and Emily Cange of Marydale have been named the recipients of the Nicholas Kleiboeker-Torrey Stoffel-Gray Memorial Scholarship. Cange attended Belleville West Township High School and is studying nursing.  She is the daughter of Keith Cange and Lorraine Cange. Dickenson is a 1989 graduate of Sandia High School and the daughter of Charlein Steele.   • Residence destroyed in Friday fire

    A rural Vandalia home was destroyed by fire last Friday morning.
    Vandalia’s volunteer firefighters were called to the Brice Summers residence south of Vandalia, on Hobler Hill off of Carlyle Road, at 8:27 a.m.
    When they arrived at 8:30 a.m., firefighters discovered the residence – two mobile homes that were attached – was fully involved in flames.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Dec. 9, 2010

    • Gracie M. Olmstead, 22, 437 S. Locust St., Brownstown, was arrested on Dec. 7 for failure to appear in court on an ordinance violation. Bond was $2,500.
    • Larry D. Karnes, 30, 406 S. College St., Brownstown, was arrested on Dec. 7 on a charge of driving while his license is suspended or revoked. Bond was $1,500.
    • Scott T. Richardson, 24, RR 2, Brownstown, was arrested on Dec. 7 for failure to appear in court on a felony charge and on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $2,500.
