  • Halloween Spooktacular

    Vandalia Main Street held its Spooktacular Saturday on Saturday in downtown available. In the first photo, Linda Kelly of the Evans Public Library staff, right, reads Halloween stories to a group of children. In the second photo, JoAnna Helm, owner of Word, Wicks and Wood, hands out candy to some of the children trick-or-treating at downtown businesses.

  • Book a look into the past

    Betty Miller recently presented the Friends of the Brownstown Branch Library with a photo album that holds a part of Brownstown’s history, a part of her late husband’s legacy.
    It is inscribed: “Presented to the Brownstown Branch Library, Aug. 24, 2010; Celebraton Memorial of the 125th Anniversary of Brownstown, June 24-25, 1995, Brownstown, Illinois,”  presented by the family of Mayor Jesse Miller, Betty, Julia and Ted.”

  • Ogre greets, eats with local kids

    It would be a thrill for anyone to meet and talk with his or her hero or favorite television/movie personality … and that is exactly what the young Kirk brothers, Austin and Richard got to do recently. The visit came about thanks to their grandmother, Jodie Carnes Weaver, and some compassionate, understanding and professional people.
    They not only met “Shrek,” the big green ogre, but they lunched with him in his dressing room.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Oct. 28, 2010

    • Vernon C. Martin, 27, Greenville, was arrested on Oct. 18 on charges of driving while his license is suspended or revoked and speeding. Bond was $15,000.
    • Jarvis R. Denning, 22, RR 1, Shobonier, was arrested on Oct. 18 on a warrant for criminal damage to property. Bond was $10,000.
    • Nicky L. Maness, 31, Shelbyville, was arrested on Oct. 18 for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving under the influence. Bond was $5,000.

    New fire number
    The old emergency fire line number — 283-2121 — is not functioning and will be disconnected. Anyone wishing to report a fire should call 911 or 283-2131. Businesses and residents with remote alarm services should advise their alarm companies of this information.

  • Teen stabbed at riverfront party

    A 19-year-old Vandalia man is scheduled to appear in Fayette Circuit Court on Nov. 3 after authorities say he repeatedly stabbed another teen at a party near the Kaskaskia River.
    Bo T. Blackwell, 605 N. Rock Island, was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with aggravated battery after witnesses told officials he stabbed Jerry Alsbury, 18, with a 3 ¾ - inch knife in the left side of his abdomen. Alsbury also suffered lacerations on his left arm, left leg and buttocks, according to a preliminary report filed with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
