  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Bryon A. Magana, 20, Columbus, Ohio, was arrested on May 26 on charges of driving while his license is suspended and driving with suspended registration. Bond was $2,000.
    • Jose Meija, 25, Los Angeles, Calif., was arrested on May 26 on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis. Bond was $1,500.

  • Crowd joins Brownstown VFW to honor vets

    As the crowd gathered at the Brownstown Veterans Memorial Wall for the 20th annual Memorial Day Service, presented by the Brownstown VFW Post 9770, with numerous red, white and blue American Flags flowing in the breeze against a background of white clouds drifting across the blue sky, it seemed to be a picture of peacefulness and beauty.

    The use of social media could have been a factor in the Vandalia Police Department taking someone into custody a short time after receiving a report of vandalism.
    At 8:34 a.m. on Friday, police received a report of a 1978 Vandalia Park District truck parked at the district garage had been damaged.
    Police reported that the windshield of the truck had been cracked and that both taillights had been busted out.

    After his agency was among those called within eight days to search for three missing children, Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith believed it was time to move forward on something he had been thinking about.

  • Meyer advances to state finals; 2 Vandals, 3 Patoka entries advance to state

    Emma Meyer advanced to the state track and meet finals on Thursday, and her brother, Ethan Meyer, and Curtis Gordon advanced to the boys state track meet, also on Thursday.

    Patoka also earned four entries at the state meet next weekend in Charleston.

    Emma Meyer pole vaulted 10 feet to advance to the state finals on Friday at Eastern Illinois University.

    She had also advanced to the state track meet in the 100-meter run, but withdrew from her heat.

    • 11 a.m. – Brownstown VFW Post 9770 Memorial Day service at the Veterans' Memorial Wall in the village park.

    In the event of rain, the service will be held at United Methodist Church, just east of the village park.
    • 1 p.m. – Walk Across America at Vandalia Statehouse.
    • 1:30 p.m. – St. Elmo American Legion Post Memorial Day service at the Veterans' Memorial Wall at the Phillips Building.
