  • Vandalia girls win third straight

    The five-win girls basketball team of last season is no more for Vandalia High School.

    By notching its third straight win Monday against Marquette Catholic, the Vandals – who start just one senior – erased any doubt that the growing pains from last season would continue into this season by defeating the Explorers, 59-47.

  • Vandalia wrestlers battle in loss to BW

    Junior Daniel Edwards had Vandalia’s lone victory in the varsity wrestling team’s first match of the season on Tuesday night, a 57-6 loss to Belleville West.

    Edwards – wrestling at 152 pounds – pinned his opponent 3:16 into the match to prevent the Maroons from shutting out the Vandals.

    “He had one of their weaker kids, but he did what he is supposed to do,” said coach Jason Clay. “He had a couple of nice takedowns.”

  • Vandals learn from mistakes at Turkey Tourney

    Though the Vandalia High School boys basketball team only won one game in the annual St. Anthony Turkey Tournament, the team had a shot at third place, thanks to a stingy defensive effort in its first three contests.

    Three teams in the Vandals’ bracket ended the day Friday with a record of 1-2, but the Vandals earned the right to play in the third-place game on Saturday, based on allowing the fewest total points by their opponents.

  • Halfway there

    The renovation of the building that will be the new home of the Fayette County Health Department is about 50-percent completed, and the cost of the renovation is running close to projections.

    The health department plans to begin moving about half a block east, to the former home of Leo Brown Lumber, in a little more than two months.

    A steady stream of citizens converged on the Mother of Dolors Parish Center last Tuesday to study six maps on display during a four-hour public information meeting hosted by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

  • Digital photography class at KC Vandalia Campus

    The Kaskaskia College Community Education Office will offer an intermediate digital photography class at the KC Vandalia Campus.
    The class will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 6-7, from 6-8 p.m. The registration number for the class is COED 5428 VA03E.
    Students will get to know their digital cameras a little better as they learn to take superior images and learn techniques to improve action, portrait, scenic, travel, outdoor and wildlife portraits.

  • Red Ribbon Week at BES

    Shown here are the students in grades kindergarten-third at Brownstown Elementary School who participated in Red Ribbon Week activities. The school totaled 5,786 gym laps and 3,185 track laps; together, that totaled 796 miles.
