    Eighth-grade boys regional schedule

    Area eighth-grade boys basketball teams will compete at the regional tournament next week.

    Third-seeded Vandalia received a bye in the first round and will face No. 2 Pana next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at Central A&M.

    The winner of that game will likely face No. 1 Greenville on Thursday.

    Fourth-seeded St. Elmo faces No. 5 Beecher City on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Beecher City.

    The winner will play top-seeded Ramsey on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Jan. 27, 2011

    • Jonathan A. Wilson, 23, 112 S. Hickory St., Farina, was arrested on Jan. 22 on a charge of theft of up to $300. Bond was $7,500.
    • Terry L. Alsbury, 52, 629 S. Cherry St., Vandalia, was arrested on a charge of home repair fraud (two counts). Bond was $100,000.
    • Michael B. Cyrus, 28, 1909 Arrow Drive, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 21 for failure to appear in court on a felony charge, and on charges of possession of a controlled substance (two counts) and possession of cannabis. Bond was $51,000.

    Girls regional seeds announced

    The Illinois High School Association announced the seeds for this season’s regional tournament.

    Vandalia received a No. 4 seed at the Vandalia Regional Tournament. Other teams in that regional are No. 1 Pana, No. 2 Teutopolis, No. 3 St. Anthony, No. 5 Greenville and No. 6 Nokomis.

    The Lady Vandals will play Greenville on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. The winner will play Pana.

    Vandalia defeated Greenville, 58-51, on Dec. 6 and will play the Lady Comets again next Wednesday.

  • FCH names top employee, leader of year

    At the Fayette County Hospital annual employee holiday and service awards dinner, held on Dec. 17, two employees were recognized for their exemplary performance during 2010.
    Abby Harre has worked at Fayette County Hospital for 33 years, and was named 2010 leader of the year for her leadership as manager of Food and Nutrition Services.
    One year ago, the hospital faced significant financial concerns and experienced reductions in staff and wages. Since then, the hospital’s finances have turned around, said Greg Starnes, the hospital’s CEO.

  • Boys basketball recaps

    Cougars split final two of MTC Tourney

    After defeating Cisne, 32-18, last Wednesday, the South Central High School boys basketball team lost to North Clay, 47-39, in the consolation championship game of the Midland Trail Conference Tournament on Saturday.

    The Cougars (6-14) struggled at the start, spotting Cardinals a 19-8 lead after the first quarter. North Clay extended its advantage to 31-14 at halftime.

  • Aces and Rams lose on first day at CORL

    CENTRALIA – Neither Ramsey nor Mulberry Grove were able to secure wins on Monday, the first day of the Christ Our Rock Lutheran Tournament.

    A tough fourth quarter doomed the Aces after they had made a late first-half comeback during a 53-40 loss to Sandoval, and a slow start aided the host's 75-53 win against Ramsey.

    Senior Zach Heilig hit a 3-pointer with 49.4 seconds left in the first half to put the Aces in a tie at 25 with Sandoval.
