  • Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus

    Cake decorating class
    The Kaskaskia College Community Education Office will offer a cake decorating class at the KC Vandalia Campus.
     The class will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The registration number for the class is COED 5439 VA02W  
    Students will learn the basics of cake decorating. They will learn to use the tools of the trade to create icing effects and a beautiful cake. Students will create a cake to take home. The cost is $40; students over 60 may register for supply cost of $20.

  • CAP program offers relief for farmers

    The Fayette County Farm Service Agency announced this week that producers can begin to sign up for the United States Department of Agriculture's Crop Assistance Program.
    CAP provides disaster aid to producers in specified counties whose soybeans, rice, upland cotton or sweet potato production was adversely affected by excessive moisture and related conditions in 2009.
    The signup window ends on Dec. 9, 2010.

  • Vandalia FFA attends convention

    Brenden Cripe, Aubrey Edwards, Jacob Rau, Madison White and chapter adviser Todd Ehlers recently attended the 83rd annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.
    More than 55,000 FFA members from across the United States attended the four-day event.  
    During the convention sessions at the Conseco Fieldhouse,  the group listened to speakers such as motivational speaker Josh Shipp, U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, National FFA Adviser Dr. Larry Case and retiring addresses from the national FFA officers.

    Dry conditions hurt pastures and wheat

    Statewide temperatures and precipitation were near normal last week, with the northern half of the state experiencing slightly cooler temperatures and greater rainfall totals.

    Most soils across the state continue to be in need of additional moisture due to the high winds last week that rapidly dried up any rain that was received.

    The acres of corn that remain to be harvested experienced some lodging after the high winds.

  • Arthur Young Inc. celebrating 50th anniversary

    It’s been half a century since Arthur Young, a youthful car salesman from Litchfield, came to Vandalia to take over the ownership of Burtschi Motor Co., the local Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealership.
    At that time, Young was in partnership with his former Litchfield employer, Brubaker Motor Co., in the local venture.
    Ten years later, in 1970, he became the sole owner of Arthur Young Inc.

  • Buddy Bass Tournament (Oct. 10)

    The Vandalia Sport Fishing and Conservation Club held a Buddy Bass Tournament on Vandalia Lake on Saturday, Oct. 10. The winners are pictured; from left to right: Scott Wisnasky and Mike Lindley, first place with 11.53 pounds; Robert Lindley and Troy Micnheimer, second place with 10.95 pounds; and Owen Karnes Jr. and Terry Bell and Shawn Runkel, and Carl Runkel, third place with 10.19 pounds. The big bass winner was Mike Lindley with a 2.89-pound catch.

  • Red/White Night set for Nov. 13

    Vandalia Community High School will be hosting its annual Red/White Night on Saturday, Nov. 13.

    The event will start at 5 p.m., and registration for alumni players is $10.

    Admission to the public is free.
