    • The first of four programs sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension will be at 7 p.m. at the U of I Extension Office in Vandalia at 118 N. Sixth Street. It is “Beyond Ash and Maple-Tree Selection,” and will be offered via the University of Illinois Telenet system and local computer PowerPoint presentations, allowing live discussion between the instructor and gardeners throughout Illinois.

  • The Way We Were

    15 Years Ago

    1997 – Two weeks after agreeing to consider parasailing licenses for Vandalia Lake, the Vandalia City Council voted 5-4 not to allow that kind of license. Mayor Sandra Leidner cast the deciding dissenting vote.
    The Vandalia Guaranteed Air Freight fast-pitch softball team finished second in the Class A state tournament.
    Johnny and Nellie Logue of St. Elmo celebrated their 50th anniversary.

  • Ward boundaries need adjustment

    It’s unlikely that the Vandalia City Council will act on Treasurer Marjorie Blythe’s recommendation to cut the number of city aldermen from eight to four. And while that suggestion may not spur any action, it should at least remind city officials that they should consider some action on the areas that aldermen represent.
    City officials talked several years ago about a study that would ultimately result in new boundaries for the four city wards.

  • Coal City woman killed in wreck

    A Coal City woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident last Friday morning.
    According to Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen, Sharon Lang, 68,  was crossing a rocked parking lot at the intersection of North Eighth Street and Janett Avenue on a 2007 Honda Gold Wing when she lost traction, causing her to roll the throttle open.
    Bowen said Lang's motorcycle crossed Janett Avenue and crashed into a block retaining wall.
    She was transported to Fayette County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by Bowen.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Floyd C. Crisman, 39, Tamms, was arrested on Aug. 27 on a warrant for home invasion, aggravated battery and battery. Bond was $150,000.
    • William M. Peters, 25, 626 S. Locust St., Vandalia, was arrested on Aug. 26 on charges of driving while his license is revoked or suspended and driving an all-terrain vehicle on a roadway. Bond was $1,500.
    • Zack C. Resner, 17, Effingham, was arrested on Aug. 26 on charges of reckless driving and fleeing or attempting to elude police. He was released on a notice to appear in court.

  • Team effort leads to meth arrests

    A group effort by area law enforcement officers has led to the arrest of two individuals on methamphetamine charges.
    According to Vandalia Police Chief Larry Eason, the VPD  and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation on the possible manufacture of methamphetamine in Vandalia.
    The investigation led to the execution of a search warrant at the home of Amy Miller, 31, 1319 W. Edwards St., and the arrest of Miller and Charles Roberts, 30, 422 S. Sixth St., Vandalia.
