    An open house for Matthew Dillon Connell will be held from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday at the home of Dr. Don and Phyllis Rames, 620 N. Seventh St., Vandalia. Connell will be leaving for Navy basic training.

  • Former telephone employees gather

    There were a lot of stories shared at the Ponderosa Steakhouse at noon on Monday, May 2, when former telephone operators, linemen and guests who worked for Illinois Bell attended their fourth annual luncheon.
    After the meal, everyone introduced themselves and told when and where they worked.
    Gloria Ledbetter read some humorous quotes.
    Donna Chrisman read a poem that was written by Mary Dewald.
    In the poem, Dewald recalls her days as an operator and later as a commercial employee. She had been with Illinois Bell for 25 years.

    Miles Filer of Vandalia recently celebrated his 90th birthday, and among the birthday cards he received was one from President Barack Obama.

    Andrew Scott Reynolds
    Scott and Shelly Reynolds of Hudson are the parents of a boy born at 11:49 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Bromenn Hospital in Bloomington.
    He weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was 19¼ inches long. He was named Andrew Scott.
    Grandparents are Russ and Bev Schwarm of Loogootee and Paul and Beth Reynolds of St. Peter.
    Great-grandparents are Madonna Schwarm of Loogootee and Ray and Ruth Reed of St. Peter.

    Paige Miller and Jeff Garrison, both of Brownstown, have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.


    The future bride is the daughter of Barry and Kelly Miller of Brownstown.
    The future groom is the son of Kenny and Marsha Garrison of Brownstown.
    The couple are planning a 3:30 p.m. wedding on Saturday, June 11, at Liberty Christian Church in Brownstown. A reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Vandalia.

    VBS registration begins in Brownstown
    Brownstown First Christian Church will host a Vacation Bible School Registration Carnival Kick-Off on Sunday, June 5, from 3-5 p.m. in Brownstown Park.
    There will be games, prizes, food, big blow-up toys and more. Kids, age 2 through eighth grade, are welcome to participate and to register for a whole week of Vacation Bible School.
    The theme for this year's week will be: “Inside Out & Upside Down on Main Street; Where Jesus Makes a Difference Every Day.”

    We were excited to see the sun shining on Monday as we arrived at the First United Methodist Church for Evergreen Outreach. The warmth from the sun was delightful, despite the cool breeze. We have experienced such a variety of temperature highs and lows here lately. You know what they say about Illinois, “If you don’t like the weather today, stick around, it will change tomorrow.”
