  • Arthur Young honored by GM

    Arthur H. Young, who founded Arthur Young Inc. in 1960, was recently honored by General Motors for his 50 years in the automobile business. Holding a plaque from General Motors are Arthur's son, Dennis, and Dennis' wife, Angie. The business is located at 122 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia.

    Free Christmas dinner at Northside

    A free Christmas dinner will be served at Northside Christian Church on Christmas Day from noon to 1 p.m.

    Because of space limitations, the dinner will be available to the first 100 people to sign up for the meal. To reserve a space, call the church at 283-1970 by Wednesday, Dec. 22.

    The purpose of the dinner is to provide fellowship for those who won't be able to be with their family on Christmas day.

    Northside Christian Church is located at 1845 W. Jackson St. in Vandalia.

    With the holidays just around the corner, everyone at Evergreen Outreach is experiencing the warmth, excitement and anticipation of upcoming events.
    Our tables were decorated with candles, greenery and glitter, provided by Marie Sutton and helpers, Louise Kruenegel and Genelle Hachat.
    We had a capacity crowd (head count of more than 100), and volunteers scrambled for more chairs.

    I have a problem with Christmas. It’s not that I don’t like Christmas; I really love Christmas, or at least I love what Christmas is supposed to be.

  • Engagement

    Kelli Brunk and Thomas Channing have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.
    The future bride is a 2004 graduate of St. Anthony High School in Effingham and a 2008 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where she earned a bachelor’s degree in medical science.
    She is currently a fourth-year dental student at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton and will graduate in June 2011.

    Megan Herbord and Kirk Weddle were united in marriage on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, in a 4 p.m. ceremony at Christ Tabernacle in Herrick, with the Rev. Thomas Suey officiating.
    The bride is the daughter of Rick and Sheila Herbord of Ramsey. Grandparents are Jewell Manley and the late Ross Manley, and Harold and Marilyn Behnke and the late Phil Herbord.
    The groom is the son of Aurelia Weddle and the late Todd Weddle. Grandparents are Gene and Sue Weddle, the late Dorothy Weddle,  and Sharon Law and the late Dean Law.

    Nicole Blankenship and Matthew Elam were united in marriage at 4:30 p.m. on July 3, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Greenville, with the Rev. Darryl Bolen officiating the double-ring ceremony.
    The bride is the daughter of Dan and Nelda Blankenship of Mulberry Grove.
    The groom is the son of Ron and Sandy Elam of Smithboro.
    The bride wore an Alfred Angelo, off-the-shoulder, diamond white taffeta gown, with a chapel-length train, and carried a fresh floral bouquet designed by a family friend, Karan Belcher.

  • Wreaths Across America

    The Veterans of Foreign Wars Old Capitol Post 3862 Ladies Auxiliary of Vandalia recently participated in the Wreaths Across America project, placing wreaths on all of the tombstones of veterans in the veterans' plot at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia and in other local cemeteries.

  • Church gets another chance on new home

    Just two weeks after rejecting a zoning change that would have allowed a local church to move into the former home of Rural King, the Vandalia City Council OK’d action that would make the move a possibility.
    The council voted 6-2 on Dec. 6 to deny a request to add places of worship as a permitted use in land bearing a general commercial designation.

    Fireman's Ball is Jan. 31

    The Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department will hold the 127th annual Fireman's Ball from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. at the American Legion Home in Vandalia. "Crazy Horse" will perform. Tickets, $5 each, are available from any firefighter or at the door.

    Civil War Era Fashion Show is Jan. 7

    A Civil War Era Fashion Show will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, at the Mother of Dolors Parish Center, 705 W. St. Clair St., Vandalia.
