  • Shroyer and Bowling to wrestle for RLC

    Matt Shroyer and Adam Bowling spent their high school careers adding to Vandalia's well-established wrestling tradition.

    Now, two of VCHS wrestling's all-time best will look to help Rend Lake College build a tradition of its own.

    Shroyer and Bowling recently signed letters of intent to continue their grappling careers for RLC coach Kevin Tate's young program, which will begin its third season of competition this October.

    And in signing on the dotted line, the recent VCHS grads made a little history in the process.

  • County needs Enhanced 911

    The Fayette County Board is expected to vote this week on putting an Enhanced 911 referendum on Novembers general election. Were advocating for that board action, and also for the support of E911 at the general election.

    On the agenda for the boards regular meeting this Thursday night is a proposed ordinance that would put the measure before the voters, with the recommended monthly E911 surcharge set at $2.75.

  • Paper preserves Pennington story

    Back in 1914, the editor of The Vandalia Union newspaper asked the old settlers to write down what they remembered about the county 50 years before. There were 20 or more replies, and they were published in the newspaper, beginning on April 9, 1914.

    Maranda Pennington was one of the first to respond, and her personal story of the days of 1865 is very interesting.

    She wrote, Editors and readers of the Union I do not remember any certain incidents that transpired in the year 1864, but well do I remember my experiences during 1865.

  • Brady Howard keeps overcoming obstacles

    B is for braveand for Brady Howard, who is back home in rural Brownstown after months of hospitalization in St. Louis.

    Complications following surgery resulted in a stroke, and Brady slipped into a coma, with paralysis to the right side. There were weeks of discouraging reports and a prognosis by the doctors that Brady would probably never walk again.

    However, Bradys family said that when Brady left the hospital, he would be walking out. And he did!

  • City continuing negotiations with Orgill

    More than two weeks after Vandalia officials learned that the citys hopes of landing Orgills new distribution center were being threatened, they continue to work on keeping the company here.

    Were continuing negotiations, even as we speak, Director of Economic Development and Tourism JoAnn Givens told the Vandalia City Council on Monday night.

  • Goggin withdraws, maintains claims against Friedel

    Even though he believes that he had enough valid signatures to run as an independent candidate, Greenville attorney Dan Goggin has withdrawn his plans to run for states attorney in Fayette County this November.

    Goggin pulled out of the race early Monday morning, several hours before a Fayette County electoral board was to act on an objection to Goggins nominating papers as an independent candidate.

    Amy Fulk of St. Elmo was crowned the 2008 Miss Fayette County Fair on Monday night. Fulk (seated) also won the People's Choice Award.   • County board will vote on E911 referendum

    The Fayette County Board is scheduled to vote Thursday night on putting an Enhanced 911 referendum on the November ballot.

    The Enhanced 911 committee formed by board Chairman Steve Knebel late last year is asking that the county board put the issue on the ballot.

    That committee has recommendation a monthly phone bill surcharge of $2.75 per line.

    A report on the Thursday meeting will be given on our Web site and in next week's issue of The Leader-Union.

  • UPDATE at 11 a.m. on Monday-Goggin withdraws

    Greenville Attorney Dan Goggin, who planned to run as an independent candidate for Fayette County state's attorney, has decided to drop out of the election.

    Fayette County Clerk and Recorder Terri Braun announced late Monday morning that Goggin had filed a request to withdraw as a candidate earlier that morning.

    Because of his withdrawal, an electoral board hearing slated for Monday afternoon was canceled.
