    This week’s Mystery Banks Photo: This Stringtown graduate came to Vandalia to attend high school. She is shown modeling a dress she wore to her sorority initiation. A World War II bride, she was married in Atlanta. In Vandalia, she lived in the same house, with many of the same neighbors, for more than 50 years.

    1996 – Haier Plumbing & Heating of Okawville was hired by the city of Vandalia to lay a city water line to the new work camp at Vandalia Correctional Center.
    Adam Lach and Chris Mason of Vandalia Community High School were selected by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 to attend Boys’ State in the summer at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

  • Jehovah Lutheran Church once thriving

    Lutherans living in Sharon and Hurricane townships organized the Jehovah Lutheran Church in what is now Shafter Township in 1879. Prior to 1913, Shafter Township was part of Sharon, and was identified as West Sharon Township.

  • Jobs are always welcome here

    The announcement this week that a Denny’s restaurant will be coming to the Fast Stop Travel Center at Vandalia’s western I-70 intersection is the kind of good news that we need to hear. And we’d like to hear it more often.
    The news ended a four-year search by South Central FS general manager Byron Sikma to find a suitable restaurant to fill that facility. As noted in a story on page 5A of today’s paper, he was committed to landing a well-known national brand restaurant.

    Historical Society meets Tuesday

    The Vandalia Historical and Genealogical Society will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Evans Public Library in Vandalia. Gloria Durbin will present part two of "Dating Old Photographs." Visitors are welcome to the society meetings.

    Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers

    Habitat for Humanity is in need of volunteers on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m.-noon.

  • Police will accept prescription drugs this Saturday

    As part of a nationwide campaign to prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands, the Vandalia Police Department will be collected unwanted prescription drugs.
    Local residents may drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the police department, 219 S. Fifth St., between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Vandalia's Cleanup Week is May 9-13

    Vandalia residents who are customers of Doty Sanitation will have the opportunity to get rid of unwanted items during the city’s annual Cleanup Week, May 9-13.
    The unwanted items are to be placed alongside regular trash on residents’ normal trash pickup days.
    Residents wishing to get rid of old appliances and other large items are not required to call city hall. They need only to place those large items out with their regular trash. City workers will be following Doty Sanitation crews during Cleanup Week and picking up large items set out by residents.

  • Man accused in stabbing to be in court Wednesday

    An Edgewood man who was arrested after a stabbing in the southeast corner of Fayette County a little more than a week ago was to make his first court appearance with an attorney on Wednesday.
    Walter L. West, 20, faces felony aggravated battery charges for his role in an incident on April 15 at a home in rural Laclede.
    The Illinois State Police reported that they received a 911 call about an altercation at 6:03 p.m. on April 15. Three troopers responded to the scene.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-April 28, 2011

    • Jay G. Smith, 59, 518 W. Orchard St., Vandalia, was arrested on April 25 on a charge of driving under the influence. Bond was $3,000.
    • Ryan E. Peterson, 34, East St. Louis, was arrested on April 25 for failure to appear in court on a felony charge. Bond was $5,000, and he was turned over to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
