  • 2008 a year of successes

    Fayette County students began taking classes at Kaskaskia College’s new campus in Vandalia.

    A fight to get the Vandalia Statehouse reopened ended when an anonyomous donor stepped forward with the funds needed to pay a state employee.

    Fayette County residents had choices when it came to electing a state’s attorney, circuit clerk and coroner in November.

    Those were among the stories from 2008. Today, we continue our look back at last year.

  • St. Elmo, Brownstown residents urged to be informed about consolidation

    For a little more than two years, a dozen residents of the Brownstown and St. Elmo school districts have studied how a consolidation of the two districts would improve the educational offerings for their children. Now, they are anxious to share their findings with their fellow residents.

    At a meeting on Tuesday night, the consolidation Committee of 10 hashed out at length just how they can best relay their findings to residents of the two districts.

  • Vera formerly called Canaan, Rosecranz

    “In 1861, there was not a house where Vera is now – nothing but a switch – and it was called Canaan.” So read the recollections of Marcella B. Doyle, published in The Vandalia Union in 1913 to commemorate its first 50 years of publication.

    Mrs. Doyle was one of Fayette County’s many old settlers who responded to the editor’s request for stories about what Fayette County was like "back in the day," as the younger generation phrases it.

    Area residents awoke on Tuesday morning to find everything covered with a thin layer of ice. The freezing rain left icicles hanging from Vandalia Main Street's statue of Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln Park.

  • Cougars win fourth VHT title this decade

     The script would have been too cheesy to believe - had the South Central boys basketball team not written it in Vandalia.

    The Cougars entered the 37th Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament on Dec. 26 with a pedestrian 4-4 record and few believing they could even come close to competing for another tournament title.

  • Vandals get back on track at Carlinville

     Carlinville threw a zone defense at the Vandalia boys basketball team Tuesday night.

    The Vandals responded by getting in the zone on offense during a decisive 20-0 first-half run.

    VCHS hit 8 of 10 from the field during the scintillating six-minute span, turning a 12-9 deficit into a 29-12 lead.

  • Garrett getting ready for 12th pro season

     If everything goes as planned, pretty soon Shawn Garrett will be headed to another baseball spring training.

    For now, the South Central graduate is relaxing, deer hunting and pondering which team he will be playing for in about two months.

  • FCH will host two health care discussions this Thursday

    President-Elect Barack Obama has made it clear that health care reform is one of his top priorities.

    That’s why the Obama-Biden transition team is asking people to give their own thoughts and ideas how to fix the system at Health Care Community Discussions all across the country.

    It will take all of us working together to tackle health care reform, and we are counting on Americans from every walk of life to get involved.

    Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care will host two community discussions, both on Thursday, Jan. 8.

  • County to make offer on Washington School

    The Fayette County Board is on the verge of buying property that served as a Vandalia school for about 70 years.

    Meeting in special session on Monday night, the board voted unanimously to make an offer on the Washington School building.

    The board approved a $1,000 earnest check, then voted to make a $75,000 offer to the Fayette County Knights of Columbus for the building in the 300 block of South Eighth Street in Vandalia.

  • Despite some uncertainty, 2008 had some successes

    A word that could best describe 2008 in Vandalia and Fayette County is “uncertainty.”

    In the past year, rains that came often and early caused Fayette County farmers to be uncertain about this year’s crops.

    Area residents employed at Orgill’s distribution center were uncertain about the future of their jobs for an extended period. In July, those workers learned that Orgill will close the local center when it opens a new distribution center in Missouri.
