  • Parks forum is Thursday

    Do you have a strong opinion on whether the Vandalia Park District should allow the presence of alcohol at softball games and special events in the city's parks? If so, next Thursday is the time to voice those opinions.
    The park district is holding a public hearing on the issue at 6 p.m. next Thursday in the Little Theater at Vandalia Elementary School.

  • Pennington recognized at Girl Scout meeting

    Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois held its sixth annual meeting on April 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn in O’Fallon.
    During the meeting, approximately 300 Girl Scout members (adults and girls) from throughout Southern Illinois elected Board of Directors members and received a “State of the Council” report from Dixie Travelstead, GSSI Board of Director chair, and Villie M. Appoo, GSSI chief executive officer.

  • Golden Circle Menus

    Golden Circle Nutrition Program, located at 616 W. Jackson St., Vandalia provides meals in a comfortable setting to people 60 years and older and their spouses. There are no income guidelines or any type of restrictions besides the age limit.  Meals are prepared by Deb’s Catering of Altamont and delivered fresh daily. The suggested donation is $2.60 for meals.

  • PBIS at BES

    The Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) team at Brownstown Elementary held  its good behavior reward for March on Friday.

    The PBIS team at BES consists of teachers Lisha Ledbetter, Keri Buscher and Talitha Wiedman, and Principal Angela Reeter. The activity for March was a game of "Hungry Hippos" for eligible students in grades K-6. Here, kindergarten student Madi Miller is pushing first-grader Abram Austin while participating in a PBIS reward game.

    To celebrate National Kick Butts Day, Stacia Braun at Vandalia Elementary Teacher took her fourth grade-class to Rogier Park on Monday.

  • Bethel Baptist announces Easter services

    Bethel Baptist Church, located northwest of Vandalia on Ill. Route 185, has announced its schedule for Easter services:
    • Thursday – Maundy Thursday services. Worship will be centered on "The Seven Last Words of Christ."
    • Easter Sunday – 7 a.m., sunrise services; 7:30 a.m., Easter breakfast; 9 a.m., Sunday School; and 10:15 a.m., Bethel choir Easter cantata – "Run to the Cross."
    The public is invited to participate in the church's services.
