  • Behrends – Andel

    Jennifer Behrends and Timothy Andel, both of Arlington Heights, have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.
    The future bride is the daughter of Gary and Carole Behrends of Arlington Heights.
    Grandparents are Martin and the late Norma Behrends of Brownstown, and the late Edna and Lloyd Lindquist of Arlington Heights.
    She received her undergraduate English degree in 2008 from University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She is currently employed by The Westin Hotel in Wheeling as the catering coordinator.

  • Health department sets moving schedule

    The Fayette County Health Department has scheduled its move into its new home.
    The work on the department’s new office complex, located at 416 W. Johnson St. in Vandalia, is nearing completion, and department employees will begin moving into the former Leo Brown Lumber building at the end of this month.
    The FCHD home health and hospice departments, currently housed at 120 S. Fifth St. in Vandalia, will move into the new complex on Jan. 28.

  • Early Morning Fire

    A fire early last Thursday morning caused damage estimated at $30,000 to a house in Vandalia. Vandalia firefighters were called to 1806 W. Johnson St. shortly before 2:30 a.m. Firefighters contained a fire to a bedroom of the home, which is owned by Joseph Hicks and occupied by Ashley Hicks. No injuries were reported. Twenty-three firefighters responded to the call, and VVFD members were at the scene for about 95 minutes. The fire is still under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

  • Miss Fayette County participating in state pageant

    The IAAF Convention will be held this Thursday through Sunday at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. At this convention, county fair officials can get ideas and book events for their 2011 fair.
    A big part of this convention is the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant. Miss Fayette County Fair Queen Amy Pippin will compete for this title, along with 65 other contestants from throughout the state.

  • Ruling in St. Elmo candidacy case coming Friday

    A municipal electoral board in St. Elmo will rule Friday on whether two candidates for alderman seats will be allowed to stay on the April ballot.

    Larry Tish, St. Elmo's mayor and the chairman of the electoral board, made that announcement at the conclusion of a hearing on Wednesday evening that lasted about an hour.

    At issue are objections filed to nominating petitions filed by incumbent Aldermen Lloyd Carson and Jayson Porter.

    The Vandalia Junior High School basketball teams battled Litchfield last Thursday. The seventh-graders lost, 35-24, and the eighth-graders lost, 36-27.
