  • Meth maker gets 16 years in prison

    Two months after his wife accepted a lengthy prison term for being involved in the manufacture of methamphetamine, a rural Beecher City man was also given a double-digit sentence.

    Charles E. Grifftith, 48, was given a 16-year sentence by Fayette County Resident Circuit Judge S. Gene Schwarm at the conclusion of a hearing last Thursday.

    Griffith was sentenced to prison two months after a Fayette County jury found him guilty of participation in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

  • Two killed in Saturday wreck

    Two people died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident south of Vandalia on Saturday afternoon.

    According to the Illinois State Police, the accident resulted in the deaths of Roger D. Johnson, 62, of Taylorville, and Betty G. Bowker, 72, of Edinburgh, Ind.

    Johnson was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident, and Bowker was a backseat passenger in the vehicle driven by Kimberly M. Streeval, 44, also of Edinburgh.

  • Samuel D. Davis had local connection

    “Father told us children that when he was about 16 years old he was living in York County, Pa. When the war came, his father, Joseph, was drafted, but did not want to enter the service of his country, and asked my father’s oldest brother if he would go in his stead. My uncle had a premonition that if he went to war, he would be killed.

    “Father, who was a few months past 16, said he would go to the front if they would accept him. Well, to make a long story short, father reported to the recruiting station and made inquiry if he would be accepted.

  • Comets edge Vandals

    The physical toll was evident.

    Blood seeped from Vandalia senior Jake Etcheson's right arm as the final seconds ticked away Friday night at Mark Greer Field.

    And classmate Mitch Whightsil limped gingerly on his injured ankle as the Vandals progressed to midfield for their postgame huddle.

    The emotional toll following the Vandals' 14-7 loss to Greenville was even more transparent, however, as sophomore Cory Bunker clutched his facemask in despair as he stared at the ground, while his teammates' eyes welled up with tears following Vandalia's first loss of the season.

  • S.C. gets 3rd, VCHS 5th at Vandalia Tournament

    Doing anything besides sleeping at 8 o'clock on weekend morning is a pretty unenviable task.

    So playing a 14-1 South Central team at that early hour was obviously a tall order for the Vandalia volleyball team in the Lady Vandals' opening match of their own tournament Saturday.

    Vandalia was up for the challenge early, jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the opening set against the Lady Cougars. But South Central proved to be a morning team as well, recovering from a slow start to pull out a 25-21, 20-25, 15-7 win over the host team.

    The Mulberry Grove Junior High School softball team enters its second IESA Class A state tournament in six years with what coach John Barnes believes is a healthy mix of confidence and humility.

    The Lady Eagles have plenty of reasons to believe they can bring home some hardware as they enter Friday's 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal against Springfield Christ the King at Champions Field in Normal with a perfect 16-0 record, a lights-out pitcher in Becca Oldham and a potent offensive attack.

  • Restore the funds

    The Illinois Senate on Tuesday passed a resolution that could restore funds to keep the doors open at 14 historic sites – including the Vandalia Statehouse – and 11 state parks in the state.

    The 40-15 Senate vote means that body joins the Illinois House in supporting restored funding for those sites. Tuesday's Senate bill would funnel more than $220 million toward parks, historic sites and social service programs.

    Now, it's Gov. Rod Blagojevich who stands in the way of keeping the sites open to the public.

  • Crop survey projects high yields in Fayette County

    Some rain in the early spring delayed the planting of corn and soybeans in Fayette County. More rain delayed the planting even more. And yet more rain delayed the planting even more.

    And there were some crops that had to be replanted because of later rains.

    Yet, Fayette County looks to finish this growing season with some strong corn and soybean yield totals.

    In fact, the 2008 yield totals could be even higher than last year, which was deemed by farm officials to be one of Fayette County’s better years.

  • Memorial exhibit displayed at KC Vandalia Campus

    The words “hero” and “role models” are “bandied about kind of carelessly,” Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn said in Vandalia last Wednesday.

    Many times, a hero is described as a professional baseball player who hits a home run in the ninth inning, Quinn said while speaking at the unveiling of the “Portrait of a Soldier” memorial at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus.
