    Mary Ann Rhoades has been selected as the 2012 Illinois 4-H Foundation Hall of Fame Award recipient from Fayette County.

    Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dowell of Vandalia will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Sunday.
    Bob Dowell and the former Margie Niehaus were married on June 3, 1962, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia.

    Wild Birds
    Last week’s column about the wild birds brought forth several comments from bird watchers. It seems many Fayette County residents provide feeding stations, birdhouses and nesting materials for the little feathered critters.
    Return of the Quail
    The first year we lived here, there was a family of little quail that lived at the north end of the lane. We would sometimes see the little family as we were driving out of the lane. The little ones followed their mother, and we enjoyed them so much.

    First Baptist Church of Brownstown will host Vacation Bible School, starting next Monday and concluding next Friday. The program will run from 6-8:30 p.m. daily.

    These past three years, the Vandalia Ministerial Alliance has sponsored the National Day of Prayer. Until 2009, Duane Luallen organized this event for more than 20 years. When Duane gave it up for health reasons, it took several ministers to do what he had done. As a community and a ministerial alliance, we are eternally grateful to Duane for his outstanding contributions over the years!

  • Vandalia native is first to become priest

    Calling it “the greatest day of my life,” Vandalia native Zach Edgar was ordained as a Catholic priest in Springfield on Saturday morning and conducted his first Mass in his home church on Saturday evening.

  • Brownstown VFW holds Memorial Day services

    The numerous American flags at the Brownstown Memorial Wall seemed to be waving victoriously against the white clouds and blue sky as the people from Brownstown, Sefton and surrounding towns gathered to pay homage to the fallen heroes and the ones still protecting our country.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Billy J. Smith, 32, 326 S. Superior St., Ramsey, was arrested on May 25 on charges of aggravated battery of a correctional officer and public intoxication. Bond was $25,000.
    • Harvey D. Manning, 46, 111 N. Main St., St. Elmo, was arrested on May 25 on a charge of driving without a valid license. He was released on a notice to appear in court.
    • Taylor L. Craig, 21, Decatur, turned her self in on May 25 on a warrant for failure to appear in court. Bond was $3,500.
