  • South Central struggles at Altamont Tourney

    ALTAMONT – South Central struggled during its season-opening Jr. Legion tournament in Altamont on Saturday, losing both games in pool play.

    In each of the two games, a 4-1 loss to Newton and a 12-3 loss to Altamont, Post 519 gave up the lead early on and wasn’t able to recover.

    Newton left the bases loaded in the first inning, but put a run on the board in the third and then took advantage of three walks, two hits and an error in the fourth to go ahead, 4-0.

  • First boys shootout is on Monday

    The first of four summer boys basketball shootouts in Vandalia will be played next Monday and Tuesday.

    There will be 16 teams in the field – including conference rivals Roxana, Litchfield and Hillsboro, and Vandalia Holiday Tournament regulars Flora and Altamont.

    Vandalia’s game will be at the following times.

    Monday, June 11
    at VJHS
    •9 a.m. vs. Fairfield
    •10:40 a.m. vs. Princeton, Ind.
    •1:10 p.m. vs. Jerseyville
    •3:40 p.m. vs. Trico

  • PHOTO: ECI Liberty Take Second in Tourney

    The East-Central Illinois Liberty recently placed second at the Central Illinois Rampage Memorial Day 13U Tournament at Rochester.

    In game one, ECI beat Jacksonville, 5-4, with Andrew Herpstreith picking up the win. In game two, ECI lost to Springfield, 6-5, with Alec Schroeder taking the loss. In game three, ECI beat Pawnee, 8-3, with Adam Miller earning the win. In the championship semifinals, ECI beat Central Illinois, 9-5, with Richie Well notching the win, and in the title game, ECI lost to the Jacksonville Lightning, 17-7, with Well taking the loss.

  • Protz Wins at Coles County Dragway

    Vandalia Community High School principal Randy Protz won the 2012 Coles County Dragway NHRA King of the Track trophy after winning the event on Sunday.

    He placed first in super pro (6.077 seconds) to qualify for the King of the Track competition, which he won in 7.095 seconds. In that race, his reaction time to the green light was just .502 seconds.

    Also on Sunday, Protz's daughter, Brandy, who will be a junior at VCHS next school year, won the Jr. Dragster race in 7.937 seconds.
