Two days removed from its only close game of the season – a down-to-the-wire 42-37 win at Piasa-Southwestern Saturday – the Vandalia girls basketball team wasted little time making sure there would be no such drama Monday in its South Central Conference East Division opener against Greenville.

The Vandalia car and truck dealership that operates the Toys for Tots program each year is accepting donations.

Arthur Young Inc., located at 122 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia, is accepting donations of new or like-new toys and other items for children.

Donations that are received through the program are turned over to Fayette County Caring and Sharing and included in Christmas baskets for needy families in the county.

"We're asking that local residents help us provide children in the county with a Merry Christmas," said Dennis Young of the dealership.

Michael York – the rural Ramsey man who agreed last month to a 20-year prison sentence for the murder of his unborn child – will seek a second trial under new counsel.  

 Mayor Rick Gottman could be challenged by at least two other people as he seeks a third term as mayor.

John David Wehrle Jr. has picked up a mayoral petition, according to City Clerk Peggy Bowen.
