  • Junior Olympian Champion

    Kassidy VanUytven recently competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, earning a gold medal in tumbling.

    Kassidy is a member of the Triple AAA tumbing team of Vandalia.

    She is the daughter of Keith and Kayla VanUytven of Vandalia, and the granddaughter of Mark Lorton of Vandalia; and Cindy and Huck Scribner, and Dan and Patti VanUytven of Ramsey. She is the great-granddaughter of Faye Lorton of Ramsey; Brad Lorton of Cowden; and Donna and the late John VanUytven of Occonee.

    The Kaskaskia College Early Childhood Education Program is now taking applications for the fall 2011 semester.
    The Early Childhood Education Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to prepare themselves for employment, to continue their education at an institution of higher learning and to develop a more satisfactory philosophy of life.

    Partners in Reading celebrated its 14th year of mentoring and reading to Vandalia elementary students with a dinner in the spring. Jefferson Primary School and Vandalia Elementary School held luncheons in April and May to honor volunteer readers.

    he program runs from October to April, with adult volunteers going into the schools one day a week to read to a student during the student's lunch hour. Adults who are interested in participating in the program during the 2011-12 school year should call 283-0671.

    Tools for School
    dates, times set

    Tools for School, a program that provides free school supplies for Fayette County students in need, will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia on the following dates and times:
    • Wednesday, Aug. 10 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    •Thursday, Aug. 11 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 12 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 13 – 9 a.m.-noon.
    The program is open to all students in need in grades K-12.
