  • Even governor must get his day in court

    What a difference a week can make.

    It was a little more than a week ago that almost everyone had said that Rod Blagojevich was done as governor, that he should resign from office, after being arrested on federal corruption charges.

    Now, many are changing their tune, pointing out that Blagojevich is innocent until proven guilty, and that some of the allegations aren’t nearly as bad as they sounded just a week ago.

    Indeed, Blagojevich deserves his day in court.

  • Vandals ride defense to two road victories

     The season of giving is upon us, but the Vandalia boys basketball team is not in a generous mood.

    In a game that had to have established some modern VCHS records for defensive excellence, Vandalia flat-out stifled South Central Conference East Division rival Litchfield Friday in a 37-20 road victory.

     The Brownstown boys basketball program waited 15 long years to get a chance to compete for a championship in the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

    The Bombers then had the misfortune of running into a team folks may be talking about for 15 years to come.

  • Shirley gets win No. 500

     For the 500th time in 26 years, a Gary Shirley-coached team emerged victorious when the final buzzer sounded Saturday night in the South Central Cougars' 49-39 win over Beecher City in third-place game at the 49th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

    It is a milestone that few coaches manage to reach. But Shirley was quick to note that such feats aren't achieved in team sports without a lot of help - both on and off the court.

  • Tonight's VCHS boys basketball game vs. Hillsboro cancelled

    Due to the latest round of icy weather, tonight's VCHS boys basketball home opener against Hillsboro has been cancelled. The game was originally postponed back on Dec. 16 due to freezing rain.

    The Vandals (4-5) will now make their home debut Friday at 8 p.m. against Stewardson-Strasburg at the 37th Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

  • Lady Vandals improve to 8-0

    Fittingly, on a night in which a team-first player, senior Laura Hobbie, was recognized for reaching a career scoring milestone, the Vandalia girls basketball squad demonstrated how it has used outstanding teamwork to ascend to the ranks of the top-10 Class 2A teams in the state.

  • VCHS girls game at Pana postponed

    Tonight's much-anticipated VCHS girls basketball game at Pana has been postponed due to icy conditions. The game has been rescheduled for Jan. 22 at Pana.

    The VCHS boys will make up Tuesday's iced-out home opener against Hillsboro on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at VCHS.

    Thursday's slate at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament will be played as scheduled.

  • Breaking News-Wednesday at 4 p.m.---Statehouse will reopen

    Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman announced late Wednesday afternoon that the state has accepted an anonymous donation from a local resident and will reopen the Vandalia Statehouse.

    The donation to the Illinois Historic Preservation, which is being channeled through the Old Capitol Foundation, will pay the salary of a full-time employee at the Statehouse.

    The IHPA issued the following press release on Wednesday afternoon:

  • Lady Vandals stave off Hillsboro

    The key to running an effective motion offense is no secret - you've got to stay in motion.

    The Vandalia girls basketball team struggled in that area Thursday at Hillsboro, and the results were not pretty, as the Lady Vandals settled for a number of contested jumpers and shot just 34 percent from the floor.

  • Greenville rallies past Vandals late

    For 27 minutes, the Vandalia boys basketball team did everything it needed to do to pull off an upset of its biggest rival on the road.

    But then, everything that could go wrong for the Vandals did go wrong over the final five fateful minutes.

    Now, Jan. 16 cannot come soon enough.
