  • Austin, Bell get wins at conference meet

    GREENVILLE – Senior Daniel Bell and junior Quenten Austin both won individual events at the South Central Conference Championships on Tuesday, helping the Vandals place fifth as a team.

    For Austin, getting to the 300-meter hurdles may have been more of a challenge than actually winning the race.

    In the 110-meter hurdles, the runner in the lane next him inadvertently knocked a hurdle into Austin's lane, making him stumble and finish last.

  • Lady Vandals battling through a rough patch

    Already mired in a slump, the Lady Vandals received no favors on Monday when they faced Marquette Catholic and standout left-handed pitcher Alexis Silkwood.

    She did what she does, striking out 14 Lady Vandals during a 7-1 Marquette win, which pushed Vandalia’s losing skid to four games.

    Coach Brian Buscher said Silkwood was easily the best pitcher Vandalia has faced all season, but he was very glad to see his team produce a run.

    Jolene Poore and Kyle Schappachar were united in marriage on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Christ Lutheran Vail, Tucson, Ariz., with the Rev. David Hook officiating the ceremony.


    The bride is the daughter of Margaret Poore of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
    The groom is the son of Johnnie and Ruth Ann Schappachar of Tucson. Grandparents are Floyd and Mildred Meseke of Vandalia.
    The couple lives in Canada.

  • Mahon racking up wins, saves for SEMO in '11

    St. Elmo grad Logan Mahon, a Southeast Missouri State University pitcher, recorded his seventh save as well as his fifth win of the season over the past 10 days.

    With the most recent save, Mahon moved into third on the SEMO list for saves in a single season. In a 5-4 triumph against Murray State, Mahon, who allowed one hit in two innings of work, walked three batters. He is one save away from being tied for second, and only four saves from the all-time record in a season.

    Gene and Carolee Boggs of Brownstown will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their family from noon-4 p.m. on Sunday in the basement of the Vandalia Eagles Club.

  • Vandals go 1-3 in four SCC games

    The Vandals ended a losing skid with a win at Marquette Catholic on Monday.

    The Vandals beat the Explorers, 6-4, despite just two base hits.

    Juniors Ian Murrell and Dathan Berning both had singles, and junior Trevor Montgomery scored twice during the game.

    Vandalia struck out 14 times during the game, but were able to take advantage of three walks and three Marquette errors.

    Murrell earned the win for the Vandals, striking out six, while allowing just three hits, one walk and no earned runs over seven innings.
