    • Marlon E. Cooper, 59, Dupo, was arrested on July 18 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage. Bond was $5,000.
    • Omar N. Garcia, 25, Columbus, Ohio, was arrested on July 18 on a charge of driving without a valid license and lights/lamps violation. Bond was $1,500.

    ✔ The village of Brownstown will be flushing fire hydrants this Thursday and Friday. The flushing may cause temporary discoloration of water, and residents are advised to check the water before doing laundry.
    ✔ The Summer Lunches for Kids program is under way. The lunches are available from 11-11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Home and in Rogier Park in Vandalia, at the township building in Shobonier and at the township garage in Vera.

    1996 – The Vandalia City Council voted 5-4 to approve water and sewer rate increases, which averaged about 16 percent.
    The city council voted 6-2 to allow local taverns to have outside beer gardens.
    Arthur and Marie Buchanan of Vandalia planned to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Joe and Evelyn Faggetti also planned a golden anniversary celebration.

  • Give your input on bypass routes

    As the project to determine an Ill. Route 51 bypasses around area communities continues to creep along, the public once again has an opportunity to see the progress and offer input.
    The first of the local meetings was held Tuesday in Ramsey. Additional meetings are planned next week in Patoka (Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Patoka Civic Center) and in Vandalia (Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at  Mother of Dolors Parish Center).
