  • REGIONAL CHAMPS!

    The reminders were everywhere.

They litterally surrounded the Vandalia girls basketball team Thursday night in the form of countless championship banners at Teutopolis' J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

The message was clear: T-Town does not lose regionals.

The evidence was undeniable. In their 31-year history, the Lady Shoes had collected 27 regional-title plaques - including 17 in a row.

  • Vandals win 15th straight regional title

    Tradition.

For the Vandalia wrestling program, it's not only been a source of pride during what many felt would be a rebuilding year - it's been a motivating factor as well.

"They know our tradition," Vandals coach Jason Clay said of his team. "You've got some of those young kids that grew up watching it in the kids' club. They don't want to let anything slip.

  • Happy 200th birthday, Abe!

He’s long been referred to as the most respected and beloved president in our nation’s history.

And now, as we pause to observe the 200th anniversary of his birth, Abraham Lincoln is once again front and center. Across the nation – but particularly here in Illinois – we’re celebrating the life and character of this remarkable man.

  • Lincoln's time in Vandalia

This Thursday evening, beginning at 6 p.m., we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln in grand style at the old state capitol in Vandalia.

Although Lincoln belongs to the nation and to the world beyond, there was a time when Abraham Lincoln’s world was Vandalia.

The newly elected legislator arrived in Vandalia by stage on a blustery November day, squeezed in with the other five members of the Sangamon County delegation, including his mentor, John T. Stuart.

  • Bluegrass festival will replace Grande Leve this year

The Vandalia Statehouse will reopen in the near future, but it does not look like the state’s oldest existing capitol will host its annual period celebration on Father’s Day weekend.

But a local organization is ready to step in and offer a substitute festival that weekend.

The Vandalia Tourism Commission is working on a three-day bluegrass festival, according to Dean Black, commission member and city alderman.

“I think we’ll have something that people are really going to enjoy,” Black told the city council last week.

The local board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county.

  • Shirley wins final home game at S.C.

In a game featuring a pair of red-hot teams that play a similar style of disciplined basketball, the unique athleticism of Tanner Bushue and - perhaps - the hoop gods smiling fondly upon South Central coach Gary Shirley proved to be the difference in the Cougars' 53-49 win over Vandalia Tuesday night.
