    OUR PLACE to show 'Left Behind'

    OUR PLACE youth center in downtown Vandalia will be showing the movie "Left Behind" this Friday evening. The hours for the event are 6:30-9 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 p.m.
    The "Left Behind" movie is based on the book by the same title. It is rated PG-13, and parents are cautioned that some material may not be appropriate for children under 13.
    Free popcorn and drinks are available. Donations are accepted.
    Our Place is located at 507 W. Gallatin St.

  • Lenten Luncheon series under way

    The annual Lenten Luncheon series kicked off this week, with the opening event being held Wednesday at First Christian Church. John Glennon, pastor of Parkview Free Methodist Church, was the speaker.
    Following is the list of locations and speakers for the upcoming weeks:
    March 23 – First Church of God; Dan Ricketts, youth minister at First Assembly of God.
    March 30 – St. James Lutheran; Al Schumacher.
    April 6 – Mother of Dolors; Don Arndt of First Baptist Church.

  • Evergreen Outreach-March 17, 2011

    There was a “hint of green” on Monday. Those attending Evergreen Outreach  enjoyed participating in the St. Patrick’s Day program. Donna Smith was at the piano, accompanied by Jerry Brugoto on his guitar, as they entertained with Irish songs.
    The Rev. Jim Fackler, assisted by Genelle Hachat, led the group in the “Welcome" and "EO” songs, as volunteers served refreshments of cookies, iced tea, water and coffee.

  • Lenten season is a time of reflection, examination

    We are now at the beginning of Lent. The first Sunday of Lent was on March 13.

  • VES hosts Family Reading Night

    Ninety families participated in Vandalia Elementary School’s Family Reading Night held on March 3. In honor of Dr. Seuss’ 105th birthday, the participants engaged in a variety of events to celebrate reading.

  • Soroptimists take reservations for banquet

    The annual Soroptimist Awards Banquet will be held at 6:30 pm. on April 8 at Days Inn in Vandalia.
    Reservations should be made by calling Judy Wasmuth, 283-2989, no later than April 1. Limited seating is available, so reservations should be made soon.
    Soroptimist International of Vandalia is honoring three ladies in the Soroptimist International of Americas programs: Kathy Critcheloe, Women’s Opportunity Award; Gabrielle McNutt, Violet Richardson Award; and Brenda Benton, Ruby Award.

    Betty Schaub of Vandalia is celebrating her 80th birthday with an open house hosted by her family from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday in Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church in Vandalia.

  • Engel will receive NP Advocate State Award

    Jill R. Engel, MS, ACNP, FNP, ANP and CCRN-CSC, was selected by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners to receive the 2011 AANP Nurse Practitioner Advocate State Award for Excellence.
