  • Flooding Causes Sinkhole...Again

    A year after severe flooding caused a sinkhole on West Main Street at the intersection with Remann Street, a severe storm over the weekend caused an even bigger sinkhole. Employees in Vandalia's public works department were working early Monday morning to remedy the situation.

  • College Graduates

    R. Mackenzie Holaday of Vandalia graduated from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville on May 6. Holaday graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

  • VCSF Scholarships

    The Vandalia Community Schools Foundation awarded two $1,000 scholarships to the top two of 19 scholarship applicants: Morgan Hll (second from left), daughter of Dave and Tammy Hall. and Nicole Wells (second from right), daughter of  Darin and Melissa Wells. Presenting the scholarships were Sandy Peyton (left) and Sharon LaDage (right).

    The scholarship money will be held for them until graduation, and will be awarded to the school of their choice at that time.

  • VCHS Class of 1945 planning reunion

    The 1966 Vandalia Community High School class is busy preparing for its 45th reunion, which will be held Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.
    One of the activities for the weekend is a tour of the high school, where classmates can catch a glimpse of the new library, refurbished gym and new administrative addition.
    After the tour, lunch will be eaten in the high school cafeteria, and there will be a chance to tell stories, look at old pictures and just catch up on the past 45 years.

  • Freight comes out of retirement for Hall of Fame game

    About 2½ months after being inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame, the Guaranteed Air Freight fast-pitch softball team is being honored again.

  • Harmeier Signs with KC

    Derek Harmeier, a 2001 graduate of South Central High School, last week signed a letter of intent to pitch for the Kaskaskia College Blue Devils. Harmeier recorded eight wins in his senior season at South Central, had an earned-run average of 1.46 and struck out 96 batters in 62 innings. In the photo, Harmeier is flanked by his parents, Dan and Kari Harmeier. In back are South Central baseball coach Curt Jones and KC baseball coach Mitch Koester.
