  • Softball team drops home doubleheader to McArthur

    The first home games of the summer didn’t go quite as Vandalia had planned on Tuesday night, as the softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to McArthur.

    Vandalia lost the games, 8-4 and 17-1.

    In the first game, Morgan Whightsil and Kadi Metzger had back-to-back doubles in the third to get the Lady Vandals on the board, and Caitlin Alverson followed with an RBI single.

    In the fourth, Madison Click singled to open the inning, and she would score on a sacrifice fly from Whightsil, who scored on an error the inning before.

    Lady Vandal summer shootouts were held on Monday and Tuesday at Vandalia Junior High School. Vandalia was a combined 1-5.

  • Field of Dreams committee sells naming rights to high school baseball field

    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee has sold the naming rights of the high school baseball field to a local insurance company.

    Willms and Yakel Insurance Agency has agreed to accept naming rights for the next 10 years. The Field of Dreams committee will receive $4,000 annually, starting with this year.

    A sign will be installed above the scoreboard. That will be purchased and installed by Willms and Yakel.

  • Swofford wins summer tournament

    Rising Vandalia senior Blake Swofford recently won a junior tournament at the Roland Varkau Golf Course in Okawville.

    He placed first in the 16-18-year-old boys division by shooting a 70, winning the tournament by seven strokes.

    He is playing on the Jr. Tour of the Southern Illinois Golf Association, and will contend for the tour championship.

  • LLC Dental Hygiene Grads

    At the 2012 Lake Land College associate degree in the dental hygiene pinning ceremony, 25 dental hygiene graduates received their pins.

    During the ceremony, Casey Carlberg of Effingham (left) and Hailey Carson of St. Elmo (right) were inducted into the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Society. Those honored during the ceremony included Carson and Kayla VonBehren of St. Peter.

  • VFW Scholarship Winner at BHS

    Jeb Smail of Brownstown V.F.W. Post 9770, left, presented Ashley Lakin, right, a scholarship check at the Brownstown High School awards recognition ceremony in May.

    Lakin was the winner of the Voice of Democracy essay competition for BHS.

  • BHS Art Project

    The Brownstown Community Unit School District No. 201 Foundation sponsored a project through which art I and art II students at Brownstown High School created sculptures in the style of famous artist Alberto Giocometti.
