  • President project up in the air in St. Elmo

    Even though the St. Elmo City Council voted to continue its support for The President riverboat project, the boat’s future in that community is still up in the air.

    The council voted 4-2 to reinforce to developer David Campbell of Effingham the city’s support for the project at the conclusion of a two-hour special meeting.

    However, council members learned four days later, by mail, that new Mayor Larry Tish had vetoed that vote.

  • State will consider housing retired horses at Vandalia Correctional Center

    Action that would allow the Vandalia Correctional Center to host a Thoroughbred horse groomer program is going through the legislative process in the state capital.

    But an Illinois Department of Corrections source said discussions on such a program are only in the infancy stage.

    An Illinois House of Representatives committee last Wednesday unanimously passed a House resolution presented by state Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Highland).

  • Boys place second at conference track meet

    The Vandalia boys track and field team scored 38 points and placed sixth out of 12 teams at the South Central Conference meet Tuesday night at Pana.

    The host Panthers won the conference title with 108 points, outdistancing runner-up Piasa Southwestern with 104 and third-place Litchfield with 98. Finishing just in front of the Vandals were Staunton with 46 and Carlinville with 40.

    The Vandals were led by a pair of second-place finishes by Angel Osorio in the high jump and Drew Bell in the 1,600-meter run, and Will Cowger placed third in the shot put.

  • Three track records set at Greenville

    The Vandalia boys track team set three school records on the way to a narrow second-place finish in a five-team meet at Greenville last Thursday.

    The Vandals scored 94 1/2 points, only three points behind Breese Mater Dei, which won the meet with 97 1/2. Greenville finished third with 85 points, followed by Metro East Lutheran with 73 and Christ Our Rock Lutheran with one point.

    Drew Bell broke his own 3200-meter record, running a 10:01 – cutting eight seconds off his previous record of 10:09.92.

  • Cearlock signs with Stephens College

    Vandalia Community High School senior Shelby Cearlock signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday. Shown, from left, are Stephens head coach, Dane Pavlovich; Cearlock and her parents, Randy and Tracy Cearlock; and VCHS Athletics Director Mike Butler. Cearlock was the member of a VCHS girls squad that set a new single-season wins record, won the South Central Conference East Division for the first time, advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and finished with a 28-2 record.

  • Call-in day for pageants is Saturday

    Girls interested in entering pageants at this year's Fayette County Fair need to call in their registration this Saturday.

    The Little Miss Fayette County Fair pageant is open to Fayette County residents who will be 4 years old by July 13 and not over the age of 6 by that date. To enter, call pageant director Kim Fitch, 427-3762 after 9 a.m. on Saturday. The first 20 entries will be accepted.

    The Junior Miss Fayette County Fair pageant is open to girls entering grades 6-8 this fall. To enter, call Fitch after 10 a.m. The first 20 entries will be accepted.

  • Future of boat in St. Elmo up in the air

    Despite of vote of support on Thursday night, the future of The President in St. Elmo is up in the air.

    The St. Elmo City Council voted 4-2 to continue the city's support of the boat project, but the vote came after project developer David Campbell said that he and project investors were ready to move The President to another community.

  • Open house for VCHS state champs is Tuesday

    Vandalia Community High School athletes who have earned individual state championships will be honored at an open house in the high school gymnasium next Tuesday, May 12.

    Those individuals, plus the girls state champion 4x400-meter relay team, recently have had their pictures placed on the west wall of the gymnasium to recognize their achievements.
