  • Rotary seeking team for four-week visit Germany

    Rotary members of District 6490, which includes 53 clubs in Central and East Central Illinois, has announced that they will be sending a team led by a Rotarian with four outstanding professionals to visit District 1800 in North Central Germany. The group will be departing in late May and returning in late June 2012 as part of the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

    Vandal Wash to donate to sports boosters

    During the months of September and October, Vandal Wash is offering a special way for Vandal fans to support the Vandalia Sports Booster Club.
    A special access code is available, and each time that code is used for a $10 car wash, $2 will be donated to the Vandalia Sports Booster Club. The club does various projects to enhance local school sports programs and facilities.
    The code to benefit the booster club is 1230.

    1996 – An open house was being held at the new Vandalia Correctional Center work camp.
    Vandalia Police stepped up patrols around elementary schools after a 7-year-old student at Lincoln School reported that a man attempted to abduct her while she was walking home from school.
    The Fayette County Farm Bureau conducted its annual crop survey. The survey netted estimated yields of 108 bushels per acre for corn and 32.75 bushels per acre for soybeans.

    Capt. Isaac Hill, accompanied by seven Kentucky Rangers and four Russell Rangers, entered the wilds of the Illinois Territory on a survey mission in 1809.

    Though it’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years, the calendar insists that, indeed, a decade has passed since terrorists staged a series of attacks on American soil on Sept. 11, 2001.
    On that sunny September morning, hijacked planes slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, as well as the Pentagon, killing thousands of innocent people. Another airliner, apparently headed for the White House, crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers overpowered the hijackers.
