  • School board handles personnel matters

    The Vandalia Board of Education took the following action at its meeting on Tuesday.
    • Approved resignations of Brianne Henry (OKAW and VCHS) and James Moore (VCHS).
    • Approved the planned retirements of Russ Smock (Sept. 30, 2014), Mike Hicks (June 30, 2014), Kevin Schroeder (June 2015), Kim Schroeder (June 2016), Connie Lamb (June 2014), John Tedrick (June 2016) and Emma Sue Rabe (June 2015).

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-March 17, 2011

    • Reginald G. Parris, 39, Bainbridge, Ga., was arrested on March 8 for driving while his license is suspended or revoked. Bond was $1,500.
    • Mark A. White, 35, Janesville, Wis., was arrested on March 8 for failure to appear in court on a theft charge. Bond was $1,500, and he was released on a personal recognizance bond.
    • Joseph L. Deckard, 21, Bridgeport, was arrested on March 7 on a felony contempt of court warrant from Lawrence County. Bond was $15,000.

    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter met their daughter, Mahala Harpster of Cape Girardeau, Mo., in West Frankfort on Friday evening. They ate dinner together, then brought home Mahala’s pet chinchilla for the week while she attends a Farm Bureau conference in Washington, D.C.

    OUR PLACE to show 'Left Behind'

    OUR PLACE youth center in downtown Vandalia will be showing the movie "Left Behind" this Friday evening. The hours for the event are 6:30-9 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 p.m.
    The "Left Behind" movie is based on the book by the same title. It is rated PG-13, and parents are cautioned that some material may not be appropriate for children under 13.
    Free popcorn and drinks are available. Donations are accepted.
    Our Place is located at 507 W. Gallatin St.

  • Lenten Luncheon series under way

    The annual Lenten Luncheon series kicked off this week, with the opening event being held Wednesday at First Christian Church. John Glennon, pastor of Parkview Free Methodist Church, was the speaker.
    Following is the list of locations and speakers for the upcoming weeks:
    March 23 – First Church of God; Dan Ricketts, youth minister at First Assembly of God.
    March 30 – St. James Lutheran; Al Schumacher.
    April 6 – Mother of Dolors; Don Arndt of First Baptist Church.

  • Evergreen Outreach-March 17, 2011

    There was a “hint of green” on Monday. Those attending Evergreen Outreach  enjoyed participating in the St. Patrick’s Day program. Donna Smith was at the piano, accompanied by Jerry Brugoto on his guitar, as they entertained with Irish songs.
    The Rev. Jim Fackler, assisted by Genelle Hachat, led the group in the “Welcome" and "EO” songs, as volunteers served refreshments of cookies, iced tea, water and coffee.

    We are now at the beginning of Lent. The first Sunday of Lent was on March 13.
