  • Patoka boys grind out win against North Clay

    PATOKA – The Warriors had a season high in points scored on Monday, but that was just enough to fend off a pesky North Clay squad during a 72-63 win, Patoka’s first since Dec. 12.

    “A win is a positive right now,” said coach Joe Eddy. “It’s a quality win, but the good win is on Friday, when we play a conference game.”

    That, however, would actually be a great win.

  • Wrestlers start new year with success

    The Vandalia wrestling team had a strong start to the new year by going 2-1 at a quad meet in Belleville, placing 11th at the  Princeton Tournament, and defeating East Alton-Wood River and Carlinville.

    The Vandals return to the mats on Thursday for a dual meet at Highland, and for a home tri-meet against Monticello and Murphysboro at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

    Free throw contest is this Saturday

    The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a free throw competition at the Vandalia Junior High School gym on Saturday at 9 a.m.

    All boys and girls aged 10-14 are eligible for the competition, with the winners progressing to a district competition and possibly to a state competition.

    Last year, 334,000 kids participated across the country.

    Karin Cox received a doctorate degree in cognitive psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in December.

    Cox, who is a 1999 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
    The daughter of Rick and Jane (Hubbard) Cox, she is currently serving in a post-doctorate position at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

    Vandalia Elementary School is creeping closer to its goal of obtaining modern technology that is in many ways replacing chalkboards in the classroom.

    Michael Edwards and Marta Zarzecka of Vandalia are the parents of twin girls born on Oct. 28, 2011, at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.

    Boone C. Baker
    Air Force Airman Boone C. Baker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
    Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
