It’s been a long time since residents of this area have had an opportunity to put recyclable items such as plastic and glass somewhere other than their trash containers. A local committee is working to make that service available once again.

A recycling drop-off this Saturday is the latest effort of that committee, which is continuing to look into make recycling a common and regular practice in this area.

Fayette County government has endorsed an effort to recognize this region’s veterans of the armed forces.

The Fayette County Board last week approved a resolution supporting the plan for a Veterans’ Tribute on the main Kaskaskia College campus in Centralia.

Kaskaskia College is being joined by various veterans’ organizations and individuals in a project calling for the construction of a monument honoring both veterans and individuals currently serving in this country’s armed forces.

Rebounding from a week two loss to Carlinville, the Vandals shut down Roxana’s offense and forced five turnovers en route to a 35-0 victory, on homecoming.

In the opening minutes, it was Vandalia’s defense that was doing the scoring. Just six plays into the game, defensive back Cory Bunker intercepted a Roxana pass around midfield. Bunker was able to cut and weave his way to a touchdown, putting Vandalia up 7-0 after the point after-attempt.

After a failed punt by Roxana several drives later, Vandalia took over in Shells' territory with a short field.

During his four years at Vandalia High School, Jon Carroll was one of the most decorated athletes to ever walk its halls.

Carroll was named all-conference in football, basketball and baseball during his tenure.

On the gridiron, he was a receiver and returned punts. His senior year, Carroll was selected as the Hayner Award winner.

On the hardwood, he collected three varsity letters and led the Vandals to a regional championship in his senior year.
