  • BREAKING NEWS - Funds for Phase II of KC Campus in capital bill

    State funds for the second phase of the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus are included in the capital bill approved by the Illinois General Assembly.

    State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) confirmed on Friday evening that the new capital bill awaiting the signature of Gov. Pat Quinn includes $5.6 million for the second phase of the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus.

    That capital bill also ups the funds for the current phase of the U.S. Route 51 expansion to four lanes from $20 million to $54 million, McCarter said.

  • Greenville Running Club

    Greenville Running Club

    For any athlete in grades K-12 in the Greenville area.

    Sign up and first practice is Wed, June 10 at the Greenville College track. Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. through July 24 at the Greenville High School track after the first week when it will be at the college track.

    Athletes will compete in their age group competing in USTF and AAU events. Cost is $60 which will pay for entry fees and other expenses.

  • Developer seeking funds for complex project

    Vandalia officials should have a better idea within the next few days whether the proposed $300 million sports and entertainment complex project will move forward.

    JoAnn Givens, the city’s director of economic development and tourism, told the city council on Monday that Kenneth Bardwell, who heads up the Michigan-based group planning to build the complex, is in New York trying to finalize financing for the project.

  • Goldsmith appointed to school board seat

    At a special Tuesday afternoon meeting that focused on personnel issues, the Vandalia Community School District Board of Education named a new school board member and hired several employees and coaches at the junior high and high school.

    Connie Goldsmith of rural Shobonier was named to fill the remaining two years of the position vacated by Tammy Woolsey on the seven-member board.

    Other personnel action included:

    Approval of employment of cooks – Dana Smith at Vandalia Community High School; Coni Diveley, Vandalia Junior High School; and Kim Carroll, VJHS.

  • Family support vital as Newsome battles cancer

    Every year at this time there are many reunions and celebrations of family, high school graduations and other milestones reached.

    One of the foremost annual events is the Fayette County Relay for Life, an all-night event featuring various activities and entertainment, as well as a community walk in celebration of life by cancer survivors, and families, neighbors and friends of the many whose lives have been touched by the disease.

  • Relay for Life is this weekend

    The annual event held to raise funds for the fight against cancer will take on a decidedly different flavor this year, because of its location.

    The Fayette County Relay for Life has been moved from the track at Vandalia Community High School to the Lincoln Loop Walking Trail that runs through three Vandalia parks.

    The event, “Party in the Park,” will feature a number of new activities and attractions as it runs from 5 p.m. on Saturday to 5 a.m. on Sunday.

  • Relay for Life is Saturday night

    Each year, the people of Fayette County gather to remember relatives and family members who have been touched by cancer.

    That gathering also has as one of its goals to raise money to help wipe out that disease.

    This story started out as a history of the Okaw Valley Opry, with my timeline beginning around 1962.

    Bill Oliver and I had spoken on the telephone several times before an appointment was made to visit him at his Bluff City home to talk in-depth about how it all began.

    It was not until our second visit that it came to me – Bill Oliver, with the influence of his wife, Evelyn, was the Okaw Valley Opry.

  • Bell places 6th at state; first track medal in 76 years

    For the first time since 1933, a male Vandalia Community High School runner has placed in the Class A State Track and Field Meet. Over the years, several Vandals have placed in field events, and the girls 4 by 400-meter relay team won state titles last year and this year.

  • South Central falls in Super Sectional

    The Cougars' run to state came to a halt Monday night as South Central fell to Marissa High School in the Supersectional in Marion.

    “We always wanted to play in June,” South Central coach Kurt Jones said. “Of course, June is usually the state finals.”

    South Central’s ace, Tanner Bushue, got the call on just two days' rest, and he was not himself.

    Jones did not make his final decision to start Bushue until Monday. His fastball reached 90 only a few times, and his curve ball was not sharp.
