  • Downtown improvement project kicks into high gear

    It’s not quite the project that Sandra Leidner first envisioned more than a decade ago. But the main focus of the downtown improvements she wanted are still there.

    It was in February 1999 when Leidner, as Vandalia’s mayor, proposed that the city apply for a federal Transportation Equity Act grant that would provide 80 percent of the funding for downtown improvements.

  • Kevin Schaal brings life to exteriors of downtown buildings

    Something different is being added to downtown Vandalia – life-sized works of arts are appearing on various buildings.

    The colorful, paintings appear three dimensional, and although the subjects are dressed in Victorian-style clothing, their faces may seem very familiar.

    That is because the artist often is inspired by the faces of his friends, family and acquaintances.

  • Tanner Bushue drafted 69th overall by Houston Astros

    Throughout the high school baseball season, scouts flocked to Kinmundy and rumors began to fly about right-handed pitching sensation, Tanner Bushue of South Central High School.

    As the season went on, Bushue’s draft stock rose and many foresaw Bushue being drafted in the first three rounds of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Tuesday night, Bushue was drafted 69th overall by the Houston Astros in the second round.

  • Legion baseball takes the field

    Just like last season, Legion baseball's Post 95 biggest asset will be its pitching. In the first eight games this season, they’ve won just two games but have gotten at least four quality starts from their pitching staff

    The starts have lain by the wayside, though, as the offense is struggling to score runs. Four of the team's six losses are by two runs or less.

  • Track star signs with Greenville

    Paige Dodson, 2009 graduate of Vandalia High School, has announced her intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Greenville College. Dodson, the daughter of Andrew and Michelle Vaughan, will compete in track for the Panthers while pursuing a degree in pre-nursing.

    Dodson had an accomplished career earning several athletic honors competing in track, volleyball and basketball during her four years at VHS. She was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that won back-to-back state championships.

  • BREAKING NEWS - Funds for Phase II of KC Campus in capital bill

    State funds for the second phase of the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus are included in the capital bill approved by the Illinois General Assembly.

    State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) confirmed on Friday evening that the new capital bill awaiting the signature of Gov. Pat Quinn includes $5.6 million for the second phase of the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus.

    That capital bill also ups the funds for the current phase of the U.S. Route 51 expansion to four lanes from $20 million to $54 million, McCarter said.

    Greenville Running Club

    For any athlete in grades K-12 in the Greenville area.

    Sign up and first practice is Wed, June 10 at the Greenville College track. Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. through July 24 at the Greenville High School track after the first week when it will be at the college track.

    Athletes will compete in their age group competing in USTF and AAU events. Cost is $60 which will pay for entry fees and other expenses.

  • Developer seeking funds for complex project

    Vandalia officials should have a better idea within the next few days whether the proposed $300 million sports and entertainment complex project will move forward.

    JoAnn Givens, the city’s director of economic development and tourism, told the city council on Monday that Kenneth Bardwell, who heads up the Michigan-based group planning to build the complex, is in New York trying to finalize financing for the project.

  • Goldsmith appointed to school board seat

    At a special Tuesday afternoon meeting that focused on personnel issues, the Vandalia Community School District Board of Education named a new school board member and hired several employees and coaches at the junior high and high school.

    Connie Goldsmith of rural Shobonier was named to fill the remaining two years of the position vacated by Tammy Woolsey on the seven-member board.

    Other personnel action included:

    Approval of employment of cooks – Dana Smith at Vandalia Community High School; Coni Diveley, Vandalia Junior High School; and Kim Carroll, VJHS.

  • Family support vital as Newsome battles cancer

    Every year at this time there are many reunions and celebrations of family, high school graduations and other milestones reached.

    One of the foremost annual events is the Fayette County Relay for Life, an all-night event featuring various activities and entertainment, as well as a community walk in celebration of life by cancer survivors, and families, neighbors and friends of the many whose lives have been touched by the disease.
